    Genetic Transfer or Population Diversification? Deciphering the Secret Ingredients of Evolutionary Multitask Optimization

    Evolutionary multitasking has recently emerged as a novel paradigm that enables the similarities and/or latent complementarities (if present) between distinct optimization tasks to be exploited in an autonomous manner simply by solving them together with a unified solution representation scheme. An important matter underpinning future algorithmic advancements is to develop a better understanding of the driving force behind successful multitask problem-solving. In this regard, two (seemingly disparate) ideas have been put forward, namely, (a) implicit genetic transfer as the key ingredient facilitating the exchange of high-quality genetic material across tasks, and (b) population diversification resulting in effective global search of the unified search space encompassing all tasks. In this paper, we present some empirical results that provide a clearer picture of the relationship between the two aforementioned propositions. For the numerical experiments we make use of Sudoku puzzles as case studies, mainly because of their feature that outwardly unlike puzzle statements can often have nearly identical final solutions. The experiments reveal that while on many occasions genetic transfer and population diversity may be viewed as two sides of the same coin, the wider implication of genetic transfer, as shall be shown herein, captures the true essence of evolutionary multitasking to the fullest.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure

    Genetic Algorithms ::an Evolutionary Approach to Optical Engineering

    We present a Genetic Algorithm that we developed to address optimization problems in optical engineering. Our objective is to determine the global optimum of a problem ideally by a single run of the genetic algorithm. We want also to achieve this objective with a reasonable use of computational resources. In order to accelerate the convergence of the algorithm, we establish generation after generation a quadratic approximation of the fitness in the close neighborhood of the best-so-far individual. We then inject in the population an individual that corresponds to the optimum of this approximation. We also use randomly-shifted Gray codes when applying mutations in order to achieve a better exploration of the parameter space. We provide automatic settings for the technical parameters of our algorithm and apply it to typical benchmark problems in 5, 10 and 20 dimensions. We show that the global optimum of these problems can be determined with a probability of success in one run of the order of 95-97 % and an average number of fitness evaluations of the order of 400-750×n, where n refers to the number of parameters to determine. We finally comment some applications of this algorithm to real-world engineering problems

    Towards Believable Resource Gathering Behaviours in Real-time Strategy Games with a Memetic Ant Colony System

    AbstractIn this paper, the resource gathering problem in real-time strategy (RTS) games, is modeled as a path-finding problem where game agents responsible for gathering resources, also known as harvesters, are only equipped with the knowledge of its immediate sur- roundings and must gather knowledge about the dynamics of the navigation graph that it resides on by sharing information and cooperating with other agents in the game environment. This paper proposed the conceptual modeling of a memetic ant colony system (MACS) for believable resource gathering in RTS games. In the proposed MACS, the harvester's path-finding and resource gathering knowledge captured are extracted and represented as memes, which are internally encoded as state transition rules (mem- otype), and externally expressed as ant pheromone on the graph edge (sociotype). Through the inter-play between the memetic evolution and ant colony, harvesters as memetic automatons spawned from an ant colony are able to acquire increasing level of capability in exploring complex dynamic game environment and gathering resources in an adaptive manner, producing consistent and impressive resource gathering behaviors

    Submodular memetic approximation for multiobjective parallel test paper generation

    Parallel test paper generation is a biobjective distributed resource optimization problem, which aims to generate multiple similarly optimal test papers automatically according to multiple user-specified assessment criteria. Generating high-quality parallel test papers is challenging due to its NP-hardness in both of the collective objective functions. In this paper, we propose a submodular memetic approximation algorithm for solving this problem. The proposed algorithm is an adaptive memetic algorithm (MA), which exploits the submodular property of the collective objective functions to design greedy-based approximation algorithms for enhancing steps of the multiobjective MA. Synergizing the intensification of submodular local search mechanism with the diversification of the population-based submodular crossover operator, our algorithm can jointly optimize the total quality maximization objective and the fairness quality maximization objective. Our MA can achieve provable near-optimal solutions in a huge search space of large datasets in efficient polynomial runtime. Performance results on various datasets have shown that our algorithm has drastically outperformed the current techniques in terms of paper quality and runtime efficiency
