An Iterative Soft-Decision Decoding Algorithm
This paper presents a new minimum-weight trellis-based soft-decision iterative decoding algorithm for binary linear block codes. Simulation results for the RM(64,22), EBCH(64,24), RM(64,42) and EBCH(64,45) codes show that the proposed decoding algorithm achieves practically (or near) optimal error performance with significant reduction in decoding computational complexity. The average number of search iterations is also small even for low signal-to-noise ratio
Constructions of Generalized Concatenated Codes and Their Trellis-Based Decoding Complexity
In this correspondence, constructions of generalized concatenated (GC) codes with good rates and distances are presented. Some of the proposed GC codes have simpler trellis omplexity than Euclidean geometry (EG), Reed–Muller (RM), or Bose–Chaudhuri–Hocquenghem (BCH) codes of approximately the same rates and minimum distances, and in addition can be decoded with trellis-based multistage decoding up to their minimum distances. Several codes of the same length, dimension, and minimum distance as the best linear codes known are constructed
A Study on the Impact of Locality in the Decoding of Binary Cyclic Codes
In this paper, we study the impact of locality on the decoding of binary
cyclic codes under two approaches, namely ordered statistics decoding (OSD) and
trellis decoding. Given a binary cyclic code having locality or availability,
we suitably modify the OSD to obtain gains in terms of the Signal-To-Noise
ratio, for a given reliability and essentially the same level of decoder
complexity. With regard to trellis decoding, we show that careful introduction
of locality results in the creation of cyclic subcodes having lower maximum
state complexity. We also present a simple upper-bounding technique on the
state complexity profile, based on the zeros of the code. Finally, it is shown
how the decoding speed can be significantly increased in the presence of
locality, in the moderate-to-high SNR regime, by making use of a quick-look
decoder that often returns the ML codeword.Comment: Extended version of a paper submitted to ISIT 201
Self-concatenated code design and its application in power-efficient cooperative communications
In this tutorial, we have focused on the design of binary self-concatenated coding schemes with the help of EXtrinsic Information Transfer (EXIT) charts and Union bound analysis. The design methodology of future iteratively decoded self-concatenated aided cooperative communication schemes is presented. In doing so, we will identify the most important milestones in the area of channel coding, concatenated coding schemes and cooperative communication systems till date and suggest future research directions
Turbo Decoding and Detection for Wireless Applications
A historical perspective of turbo coding and turbo transceivers inspired by the generic turbo principles is provided, as it evolved from Shannon’s visionary predictions. More specifically, we commence by discussing the turbo principles, which have been shown to be capable of performing close to Shannon’s capacity limit. We continue by reviewing the classic maximum a posteriori probability decoder. These discussions are followed by studying the effect of a range of system parameters in a systematic fashion, in order to gauge their performance ramifications. In the second part of this treatise, we focus our attention on the family of iterative receivers designed for wireless communication systems, which were partly inspired by the invention of turbo codes. More specifically, the family of iteratively detected joint coding and modulation schemes, turbo equalization, concatenated spacetime and channel coding arrangements, as well as multi-user detection and three-stage multimedia systems are highlighted
