    BIM semantic-enrichment for built heritage representation

    In the built heritage context, BIM has shown difficulties in representing and managing the large and complex knowledge related to non-geometrical aspects of the heritage. Within this scope, this paper focuses on a domain-specific semantic-enrichment of BIM methodology, aimed at fulfilling semantic representation requirements of built heritage through Semantic Web technologies. To develop this semantic-enriched BIM approach, this research relies on the integration of a BIM environment with a knowledge base created through information ontologies. The result is knowledge base system - and a prototypal platform - that enhances semantic representation capabilities of BIM application to architectural heritage processes. It solves the issue of knowledge formalization in cultural heritage informative models, favouring a deeper comprehension and interpretation of all the building aspects. Its open structure allows future research to customize, scale and adapt the knowledge base different typologies of artefacts and heritage activities

    A critical rationalist approach to organizational learning: testing the theories held by managers

    The common wisdom is that Popper's critical rationalism, a method aimed at knowledge validation through falsification of theories, is inadequate for managers in organizations. This study falsifies this argument in three phases: first, it specifies the obstructers that prevent the method from being employed; second, the critical rationalist method is adapted for strategic management purposes; last, the method and the hypotheses are tested via action research. Conclusions are that once the obstructers are omitted the method is applicable and effective

    Resource partitioning theory claims that Increasing concentration enhances the life chances of specialist organizations. We systemati- cally think through this theory,specify implicit background assump- tions,sharpen concepts,and rigorously check the theory s logic.As a result,we increase the theory s explanatory power,and claim contrary to received opinion that under certain eneral conditions, resource partitioning and the proliferation of specialists can take place independently of organizational mass and relative size effects, size localized competition,diversifying consumer tastes, increasing number of dimensions of the resource space,and changing niche widths. Our analysis makes furthermore clear that specialist and generalist strategies are asymmetric, and shows that not concentration enhances the life chances of specialists but economies of scale instead.Under the conditions explicated,we argue that if scale economies come to dominate,the number of organizations in the population increases, regardless of the incumbents sizes.

    A Framework for Semi-automated Web Service Composition in Semantic Web

    Number of web services available on Internet and its usage are increasing very fast. In many cases, one service is not enough to complete the business requirement; composition of web services is carried out. Autonomous composition of web services to achieve new functionality is generating considerable attention in semantic web domain. Development time and effort for new applications can be reduced with service composition. Various approaches to carry out automated composition of web services are discussed in literature. Web service composition using ontologies is one of the effective approaches. In this paper we demonstrate how the ontology based composition can be made faster for each customer. We propose a framework to provide precomposed web services to fulfil user requirements. We detail how ontology merging can be used for composition which expedites the whole process. We discuss how framework provides customer specific ontology merging and repository.     Upward Influence in Organizations: Test of A Model

    A causal model of upward influence in organizations was proposed and tested on a sample of staff nurses and their supervisors in a hospital setting. LISREL results demonstrated that the proposed model fit the data well, and reflected a better fit than several alternative models that were estimated. The contributions and limitations of the present study are discussed, in addition to challenges and directions for future research

    Strategic decision-making processes as a mediator of the effect of board characteristics on company innovation: A study of publicly-listed firms in Greece

    Based on the Upper Echelons Theory that suggests the demographic characteristics of executives are linked to organisational processes and outcomes, the paper proposes that strategic decision-making processes mediate the relationship between board members’ demographic characteristics and corporate innovation relating to product, process and organization. Based on questionnaires completed by 101 CEOs of Greek listed firms, the findings confirm that reporting and formalization as decision processes mediate the effect of board characteristics on innovation. Sound financial and formal mechanisms encourage Greek executives to take risks and invest in product or service innovation. Findings show that the executives’ educational level is positively associated with financial reporting and rule formalization activities due to the changes that have been occurred in the Greek education system over recent decades. Functional background is found to influence only financial reporting activities. Finally, the managerial implications of this study are discussed

    What are the determinants leading to innovation in manufacturing firms

    In this paper, a comprehensive model of innovation determinants is analyzed based on empirical data gathered from 184 manufacturing firms located in the Northern Marmara region in Turkey. As opposed to the studies that establish the relationship with a limited set of antecedents and innovativeness, this study allows us to investigate how significant is an antecedent compared to others. Such knowledge is invaluable for the decision makers in order to manage their innovation strategies and provides a guideline for effective allocation of their limited resources to be more innovative. The analysis reveals that among all possible determinants considered, intellectual capital has the highest impact on innovativeness followed by organization culture. Path analyses for both of these major innovation determinants are investigated in detail. Some managerial implications are suggested
