    A Location-allocation model for fog computing infrastructures

    The trend of an ever-increasing number of geographically distributed sensors producing data for a plethora of applications, from environmental monitoring to smart cities and autonomous driving, is shifting the computing paradigm from cloud to fog. The increase in the volume of produced data makes the processing and the aggregation of information at a single remote data center unfeasible or too expensive, while latency-critical applications cannot cope with the high network delays of a remote data center. Fog computing is a preferred solution as latency-sensitive tasks can be moved closer to the sensors. Furthermore, the same fog nodes can perform data aggregation and filtering to reduce the volume of data that is forwarded to the cloud data centers, reducing the risk of network overload. In this paper, we focus on the problem of designing a fog infrastructure considering both the location of how many fog nodes are required, which nodes should be considered (from a list of potential candidates), and how to allocate data flows from sensors to fog nodes and from there to cloud data centers. To this aim, we propose and evaluate a formal model based on a multi-objective optimization problem. We thoroughly test our proposal for a wide range of parameters and exploiting a reference scenario setup taken from a realistic smart city application. We compare the performance of our proposal with other approaches to the problem available in literature, taking into account two objective functions. Our experiments demonstrate that the proposed model is viable for the design of fog infrastructure and can outperform the alternative models, with results that in several cases are close to an ideal solution

    Towards delay-aware container-based Service Function Chaining in Fog Computing

    Recently, the fifth-generation mobile network (5G) is getting significant attention. Empowered by Network Function Virtualization (NFV), 5G networks aim to support diverse services coming from different business verticals (e.g. Smart Cities, Automotive, etc). To fully leverage on NFV, services must be connected in a specific order forming a Service Function Chain (SFC). SFCs allow mobile operators to benefit from the high flexibility and low operational costs introduced by network softwarization. Additionally, Cloud computing is evolving towards a distributed paradigm called Fog Computing, which aims to provide a distributed cloud infrastructure by placing computational resources close to end-users. However, most SFC research only focuses on Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) use cases where mobile operators aim to deploy services close to end-users. Bi-directional communication between Edges and Cloud are not considered in MEC, which in contrast is highly important in a Fog environment as in distributed anomaly detection services. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an SFC controller to optimize the placement of service chains in Fog environments, specifically tailored for Smart City use cases. Our approach has been validated on the Kubernetes platform, an open-source orchestrator for the automatic deployment of micro-services. Our SFC controller has been implemented as an extension to the scheduling features available in Kubernetes, enabling the efficient provisioning of container-based SFCs while optimizing resource allocation and reducing the end-to-end (E2E) latency. Results show that the proposed approach can lower the network latency up to 18% for the studied use case while conserving bandwidth when compared to the default scheduling mechanism

    Vehicular Fog Computing Enabled Real-time Collision Warning via Trajectory Calibration

    Vehicular fog computing (VFC) has been envisioned as a promising paradigm for enabling a variety of emerging intelligent transportation systems (ITS). However, due to inevitable as well as non-negligible issues in wireless communication, including transmission latency and packet loss, it is still challenging in implementing safety-critical applications, such as real-time collision warning in vehicular networks. In this paper, we present a vehicular fog computing architecture, aiming at supporting effective and real-time collision warning by offloading computation and communication overheads to distributed fog nodes. With the system architecture, we further propose a trajectory calibration based collision warning (TCCW) algorithm along with tailored communication protocols. Specifically, an application-layer vehicular-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication delay is fitted by the Stable distribution with real-world field testing data. Then, a packet loss detection mechanism is designed. Finally, TCCW calibrates real-time vehicle trajectories based on received vehicle status including GPS coordinates, velocity, acceleration, heading direction, as well as the estimation of communication delay and the detection of packet loss. For performance evaluation, we build the simulation model and implement conventional solutions including cloud-based warning and fog-based warning without calibration for comparison. Real-vehicle trajectories are extracted as the input, and the simulation results demonstrate that the effectiveness of TCCW in terms of the highest precision and recall in a wide range of scenarios

    Fog Computing: A Taxonomy, Survey and Future Directions

    In recent years, the number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices/sensors has increased to a great extent. To support the computational demand of real-time latency-sensitive applications of largely geo-distributed IoT devices/sensors, a new computing paradigm named "Fog computing" has been introduced. Generally, Fog computing resides closer to the IoT devices/sensors and extends the Cloud-based computing, storage and networking facilities. In this chapter, we comprehensively analyse the challenges in Fogs acting as an intermediate layer between IoT devices/ sensors and Cloud datacentres and review the current developments in this field. We present a taxonomy of Fog computing according to the identified challenges and its key features.We also map the existing works to the taxonomy in order to identify current research gaps in the area of Fog computing. Moreover, based on the observations, we propose future directions for research
