    A Kalman filter approach to direct depth estimation incorporating surface structure

    The problem of depth-from-motion using a monocular image sequence is considered. A pixel-based model is developed for direct depth estimation within a Kaiman filtering framework. A method is proposed for incorporating local surface structure into the Kaiman filter.     Multi-Scale 3D Scene Flow from Binocular Stereo Sequences

    Scene flow methods estimate the three-dimensional motion field for points in the world, using multi-camera video data. Such methods combine multi-view reconstruction with motion estimation. This paper describes an alternative formulation for dense scene flow estimation that provides reliable results using only two cameras by fusing stereo and optical flow estimation into a single coherent framework. Internally, the proposed algorithm generates probability distributions for optical flow and disparity. Taking into account the uncertainty in the intermediate stages allows for more reliable estimation of the 3D scene flow than previous methods allow. To handle the aperture problems inherent in the estimation of optical flow and disparity, a multi-scale method along with a novel region-based technique is used within a regularized solution. This combined approach both preserves discontinuities and prevents over-regularization – two problems commonly associated with the basic multi-scale approaches.     Observability/Identifiability of Rigid Motion under Perspective Projection

    The "visual motion" problem consists of estimating the motion of an object viewed under projection. In this paper we address the feasibility of such a problem. We will show that the model which defines the visual motion problem for feature points in the euclidean 3D space lacks of both linear and local (weak) observability. The locally observable manifold is covered with three levels of lie differentiations. Indeed, by imposing metric constraints on the state-space, it is possible to reduce the set of indistinguishable states. We will then analyze a model for visual motion estimation in terms of identification of an Exterior Differential System, with the parameters living on a topological manifold, called the "essential manifold", which includes explicitly in its definition the forementioned metric constraints. We will show that rigid motion is globally observable/identifiable under perspective projection with zero level of lie differentiation under some general position conditions. Such conditions hold when the viewer does not move on a quadric surface containing all the visible points

    Recursive Motion Estimation on the Essential Manifold

    Visual motion estimation can be regarded as estimation of the state of a system of difference equations with unknown inputs defined on a manifold. Such a system happens to be "linear", but it is defined on a space (the so called "Essential manifold") which is not a linear (vector) space. In this paper we will introduce a novel perspective for viewing the motion estimation problem which results in three original schemes for solving it. The first consists in "flattening the space" and solving a nonlinear estimation problem on the flat (euclidean) space. The second approach consists in viewing the system as embedded in a larger euclidean space (the smallest of the embedding spaces), and solving at each step a linear estimation problem on a linear space, followed by a "projection" on the manifold (see fig. 5). A third "algebraic" formulation of motion estimation is inspired by the structure of the problem in local coordinates (flattened space), and consists in a double iteration for solving an "adaptive fixed-point" problem (see fig. 6). Each one of these three schemes outputs motion estimates together with the joint second order statistics of the estimation error, which can be used by any structure from motion module which incorporates motion error [20, 23] in order to estimate 3D scene structure. The original contribution of this paper involves both the problem formulation, which gives new insight into the differential geometric structure of visual motion estimation, and the ideas generating the three schemes. These are viewed within a unified framework. All the schemes have a strong theoretical motivation and exhibit accuracy, speed of convergence, real time operation and flexibility which are superior to other existing schemes [1, 20, 23]. Simulations are presented for real and synthetic image sequences to compare the three schemes against each other and highlight the peculiarities of each one

    Dynamic Estimation of Rigid Motion from Perspective Views via Recursive Identification of Exterior Differential Systems with Parameters on a Topological Manifold

    We formulate the problem of estimating the motion of a rigid object viewed under perspective projection as the identification of a dynamic model in Exterior Differential form with parameters on a topological manifold. We first describe a general method for recursive identification of nonlinear implicit systems using prediction error criteria. The parameters are allowed to move slowly on some topological (not necessarily smooth) manifold. The basic recursion is solved in two different ways: one is based on a simple extension of the traditional Kalman Filter to nonlinear and implicit measurement constraints, the other may be regarded as a generalized "Gauss-Newton" iteration, akin to traditional Recursive Prediction Error Method techniques in linear identification. A derivation of the "Implicit Extended Kalman Filter" (IEKF) is reported in the appendix. The ID framework is then applied to solving the visual motion problem: it indeed is possible to characterize it in terms of identification of an Exterior Differential System with parameters living on a C0 topological manifold, called the "essential manifold". We consider two alternative estimation paradigms. The first is in the local coordinates of the essential manifold: we estimate the state of a nonlinear implicit model on a linear space. The second is obtained by a linear update on the (linear) embedding space followed by a projection onto the essential manifold. These schemes proved successful in performing the motion estimation task, as we show in experiments on real and noisy synthetic image sequences

    A disposition of interpolation techniques

    A large collection of interpolation techniques is available for application in environmental research. To help environmental scientists in choosing an appropriate technique a disposition is made, based on 1) applicability in space, time and space-time, 2) quantification of accuracy of interpolated values, 3) incorporation of ancillary information, and 4) incorporation of process knowledge. The described methods include inverse distance weighting, nearest neighbour methods, geostatistical interpolation methods, Kalman filter methods, Bayesian Maximum Entropy methods, etc. The applicability of methods in aggregation (upscaling) and disaggregation (downscaling) is discussed. Software for interpolation is described. The application of interpolation techniques is illustrated in two case studies: temporal interpolation of indicators for ecological water quality, and spatio-temporal interpolation and aggregation of pesticide concentrations in Dutch surface waters. A valuable next step will be to construct a decision tree or decision support system, that guides the environmental scientist to easy-to-use software implementations that are appropriate to solve their interpolation problem. Validation studies are needed to assess the quality of interpolated values, and the quality of information on uncertainty provided by the interpolation method

    Robust Legged Robot State Estimation Using Factor Graph Optimization

    Legged robots, specifically quadrupeds, are becoming increasingly attractive for industrial applications such as inspection. However, to leave the laboratory and to become useful to an end user requires reliability in harsh conditions. From the perspective of state estimation, it is essential to be able to accurately estimate the robot's state despite challenges such as uneven or slippery terrain, textureless and reflective scenes, as well as dynamic camera occlusions. We are motivated to reduce the dependency on foot contact classifications, which fail when slipping, and to reduce position drift during dynamic motions such as trotting. To this end, we present a factor graph optimization method for state estimation which tightly fuses and smooths inertial navigation, leg odometry and visual odometry. The effectiveness of the approach is demonstrated using the ANYmal quadruped robot navigating in a realistic outdoor industrial environment. This experiment included trotting, walking, crossing obstacles and ascending a staircase. The proposed approach decreased the relative position error by up to 55% and absolute position error by 76% compared to kinematic-inertial odometry.Comment: 8 pages, 12 figures.
