Optimal Precoders for Tracking the AoD and AoA of a mm-Wave Path
In millimeter-wave channels, most of the received energy is carried by a few
paths. Traditional precoders sweep the angle-of-departure (AoD) and
angle-of-arrival (AoA) space with directional precoders to identify directions
with largest power. Such precoders are heuristic and lead to sub-optimal
AoD/AoA estimation. We derive optimal precoders, minimizing the Cram\'{e}r-Rao
bound (CRB) of the AoD/AoA, assuming a fully digital architecture at the
transmitter and spatial filtering of a single path. The precoders are found by
solving a suitable convex optimization problem. We demonstrate that the
accuracy can be improved by at least a factor of two over traditional
precoders, and show that there is an optimal number of distinct precoders
beyond which the CRB does not improve.Comment: Resubmission to IEEE Trans. on Signal Processing. 12 pages and 9

A Hybrid Global Minimization Scheme for Accurate Source Localization in Sensor Networks
We consider the localization problem of multiple wideband sources in a
multi-path environment by coherently taking into account the attenuation
characteristics and the time delays in the reception of the signal. Our
proposed method leaves the space for unavailability of an accurate signal
attenuation model in the environment by considering the model as an unknown
function with reasonable prior assumptions about its functional space. Such
approach is capable of enhancing the localization performance compared to only
utilizing the signal attenuation information or the time delays. In this paper,
the localization problem is modeled as a cost function in terms of the source
locations, attenuation model parameters and the multi-path parameters. To
globally perform the minimization, we propose a hybrid algorithm combining the
differential evolution algorithm with the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm.
Besides the proposed combination of optimization schemes, supporting the
technical details such as closed forms of cost function sensitivity matrices
are provided. Finally, the validity of the proposed method is examined in
several localization scenarios, taking into account the noise in the
environment, the multi-path phenomenon and considering the sensors not being
synchronized
Compressive Parameter Estimation for Sparse Translation-Invariant Signals Using Polar Interpolation
We propose new compressive parameter estimation algorithms that make use of
polar interpolation to improve the estimator precision. Our work extends
previous approaches involving polar interpolation for compressive parameter
estimation in two aspects: (i) we extend the formulation from real non-negative
amplitude parameters to arbitrary complex ones, and (ii) we allow for mismatch
between the manifold described by the parameters and its polar approximation.
To quantify the improvements afforded by the proposed extensions, we evaluate
six algorithms for estimation of parameters in sparse translation-invariant
signals, exemplified with the time delay estimation problem. The evaluation is
based on three performance metrics: estimator precision, sampling rate and
computational complexity. We use compressive sensing with all the algorithms to
lower the necessary sampling rate and show that it is still possible to attain
good estimation precision and keep the computational complexity low. Our
numerical experiments show that the proposed algorithms outperform existing
approaches that either leverage polynomial interpolation or are based on a
conversion to a frequency-estimation problem followed by a super-resolution
algorithm. The algorithms studied here provide various tradeoffs between
computational complexity, estimation precision, and necessary sampling rate.
The work shows that compressive sensing for the class of sparse
translation-invariant signals allows for a decrease in sampling rate and that
the use of polar interpolation increases the estimation precision.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, to appear in IEEE Transactions on Signal
