3D MODELING of A COMPLEX BUILDING: From MULTI-VIEW IMAGE FUSION to GOOGLE EARTH PUBLICATION
This paper presents a pipeline that aims at illustrating the procedure to realize a 3D model of a complex building integrating the UAV and terrestrial images and modifying the 3D model in order to publish to Google Earth in an interactive modality so as to provide better available models for visualization and use. The main steps of the procedure are the optimization of the UAV flight, the integration of the different UAV and ground floor images and the optimization of the model to be published to GE. The case study has been identified in a building, The Eremo di Santa Rosalia Convent in Sicily which hash more staggered elevations and located in the hills of the hinterland and of which, the online platform only indicate the position on Google Maps (GM) and Google Earth (GE) with a photo from above and a non-urban road whose GM path is not corresponding with the GE photo. The process highlights the integration of the models and showcases a workflow for the publication of the combined 3D model to the GE platform
3D mesh processing using GAMer 2 to enable reaction-diffusion simulations in realistic cellular geometries
Recent advances in electron microscopy have enabled the imaging of single
cells in 3D at nanometer length scale resolutions. An uncharted frontier for in
silico biology is the ability to simulate cellular processes using these
observed geometries. Enabling such simulations requires watertight meshing of
electron micrograph images into 3D volume meshes, which can then form the basis
of computer simulations of such processes using numerical techniques such as
the Finite Element Method. In this paper, we describe the use of our recently
rewritten mesh processing software, GAMer 2, to bridge the gap between poorly
conditioned meshes generated from segmented micrographs and boundary marked
tetrahedral meshes which are compatible with simulation. We demonstrate the
application of a workflow using GAMer 2 to a series of electron micrographs of
neuronal dendrite morphology explored at three different length scales and show
that the resulting meshes are suitable for finite element simulations. This
work is an important step towards making physical simulations of biological
processes in realistic geometries routine. Innovations in algorithms to
reconstruct and simulate cellular length scale phenomena based on emerging
structural data will enable realistic physical models and advance discovery at
the interface of geometry and cellular processes. We posit that a new frontier
at the intersection of computational technologies and single cell biology is
now open.Comment: 39 pages, 14 figures. High resolution figures and supplemental movies

Model-independent low momentum nucleon interaction from phase shift equivalence
We present detailed results for the model-independent low momentum
nucleon-nucleon interaction V_{low k}. By introducing a cutoff in momentum
space, we separate the Hilbert space into a low momentum and a high momentum
part. The renormalization group is used to construct the effective interaction
V_{low k} in the low momentum space, starting from various high precision
potential models commonly used in nuclear many-body calculations. With a cutoff
in the range of , the new potential V_{low k} is
independent of the input model, and reproduces the experimental phase shift
data for corresponding laboratory energies below , as well
as the deuteron binding energy with similar accuracy as the realistic input
potentials. The model independence of V_{low k} demonstrates that the physics
of nucleons interacting at low momenta does not depend on details of the high
momentum dynamics assumed in conventional potential models. V_{low k} does not
have momentum components larger than the cutoff, and as a consequence is
considerably softer than the high precision potentials. Therefore, when V_{low
k} is used as microscopic input in the many-body problem, the high momentum
effects in the particle-particle channel do not have to be addressed by
performing a Brueckner ladder resummation or short-range correlation methods.
By varying the cutoff, we study how the model independence of V_{low k} is
reached in different partial waves. This provides numerical evidence for the
separation of scales in the nuclear problem, and physical insight into the
nature of the low momentum interaction.Comment: 32 pages, 19 figure
3D Mesh Simplification. A survey of algorithms and CAD model simplification tests
Simplification of highly detailed CAD models is an important step when CAD
models are visualized or by other means utilized in augmented reality applications.
Without simplification, CAD models may cause severe processing and storage is-
sues especially in mobile devices. In addition, simplified models may have other
advantages like better visual clarity or improved reliability when used for visual pose
tracking. The geometry of CAD models is invariably presented in form of a 3D
mesh. In this paper, we survey mesh simplification algorithms in general and focus
especially to algorithms that can be used to simplify CAD models. We test some
commonly known algorithms with real world CAD data and characterize some new
CAD related simplification algorithms that have not been surveyed in previous mesh
simplification reviews.Siirretty Doriast
Multilevel Solvers for Unstructured Surface Meshes
Parameterization of unstructured surface meshes is of fundamental importance in many applications of digital geometry processing. Such parameterization approaches give rise to large and exceedingly ill-conditioned systems which are difficult or impossible to solve without the use of sophisticated multilevel preconditioning strategies. Since the underlying meshes are very fine to begin with, such multilevel preconditioners require mesh coarsening to build an appropriate hierarchy. In this paper we consider several strategies for the construction of hierarchies using ideas from mesh simplification algorithms used in the computer graphics literature. We introduce two novel hierarchy construction schemes and demonstrate their superior performance when used in conjunction with a multigrid preconditioner
