    AGOCS – Accurate Google Cloud Simulator Framework

    This paper presents the Accurate Google Cloud Simulator (AGOCS) – a novel high-fidelity Cloud workload simulator based on parsing real workload traces, which can be conveniently used on a desktop machine for day-to-day research. Our simulation is based on real-world workload traces from a Google Cluster with 12.5K nodes, over a period of a calendar month. The framework is able to reveal very precise and detailed parameters of the executed jobs, tasks and nodes as well as to provide actual resource usage statistics. The system has been implemented in Scala language with focus on parallel execution and an easy-to-extend design concept. The paper presents the detailed structural framework for AGOCS and discusses our main design decisions, whilst also suggesting alternative and possibly performance enhancing future approaches.     MLPerf Inference Benchmark

    Machine-learning (ML) hardware and software system demand is burgeoning. Driven by ML applications, the number of different ML inference systems has exploded. Over 100 organizations are building ML inference chips, and the systems that incorporate existing models span at least three orders of magnitude in power consumption and five orders of magnitude in performance; they range from embedded devices to data-center solutions. Fueling the hardware are a dozen or more software frameworks and libraries. The myriad combinations of ML hardware and ML software make assessing ML-system performance in an architecture-neutral, representative, and reproducible manner challenging. There is a clear need for industry-wide standard ML benchmarking and evaluation criteria. MLPerf Inference answers that call. In this paper, we present our benchmarking method for evaluating ML inference systems. Driven by more than 30 organizations as well as more than 200 ML engineers and practitioners, MLPerf prescribes a set of rules and best practices to ensure comparability across systems with wildly differing architectures. The first call for submissions garnered more than 600 reproducible inference-performance measurements from 14 organizations, representing over 30 systems that showcase a wide range of capabilities.     Stream Processing Systems Benchmark: StreamBench

    Batch processing technologies (Such as MapReduce, Hive, Pig) have matured and been widely used in the industry. These systems solved the issue processing big volumes of data successfully. However, first big amount of data need to be collected and stored in a database or file system. That is very time-consuming. Then it takes time to finish batch processing analysis jobs before get any results. While there are many cases that need analysed results from unbounded sequence of data in seconds or sub-seconds. To satisfy the increasing demand of processing such streaming data, several streaming processing systems are implemented and widely adopted, such as Apache Storm, Apache Spark, IBM InfoSphere Streams, and Apache Flink. They all support online stream processing, high scalability, and tasks monitoring. While how to evaluate stream processing systems before choosing one in production development is an open question. In this thesis, we introduce StreamBench, a benchmark framework to facilitate performance comparisons of stream processing systems. A common API component and a core set of workloads are defined. We implement the common API and run benchmarks for three widely used open source stream processing systems: Apache Storm, Flink, and Spark Streaming. A key feature of the StreamBench framework is that it is extensible -- it supports easy definition of new workloads, in addition to making it easy to benchmark new stream processing systems

    The Iray Light Transport Simulation and Rendering System

    While ray tracing has become increasingly common and path tracing is well understood by now, a major challenge lies in crafting an easy-to-use and efficient system implementing these technologies. Following a purely physically-based paradigm while still allowing for artistic workflows, the Iray light transport simulation and rendering system allows for rendering complex scenes by the push of a button and thus makes accurate light transport simulation widely available. In this document we discuss the challenges and implementation choices that follow from our primary design decisions, demonstrating that such a rendering system can be made a practical, scalable, and efficient real-world application that has been adopted by various companies across many fields and is in use by many industry professionals today

    GeantV: Results from the prototype of concurrent vector particle transport simulation in HEP

    Full detector simulation was among the largest CPU consumer in all CERN experiment software stacks for the first two runs of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In the early 2010's, the projections were that simulation demands would scale linearly with luminosity increase, compensated only partially by an increase of computing resources. The extension of fast simulation approaches to more use cases, covering a larger fraction of the simulation budget, is only part of the solution due to intrinsic precision limitations. The remainder corresponds to speeding-up the simulation software by several factors, which is out of reach using simple optimizations on the current code base. In this context, the GeantV R&D project was launched, aiming to redesign the legacy particle transport codes in order to make them benefit from fine-grained parallelism features such as vectorization, but also from increased code and data locality. This paper presents extensively the results and achievements of this R&D, as well as the conclusions and lessons learnt from the beta prototype.Comment: 34 pages, 26 figures, 24 table

    NeuroFlow: A General Purpose Spiking Neural Network Simulation Platform using Customizable Processors

    © 2016 Cheung, Schultz and Luk.NeuroFlow is a scalable spiking neural network simulation platform for off-the-shelf high performance computing systems using customizable hardware processors such as Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). Unlike multi-core processors and application-specific integrated circuits, the processor architecture of NeuroFlow can be redesigned and reconfigured to suit a particular simulation to deliver optimized performance, such as the degree of parallelism to employ. The compilation process supports using PyNN, a simulator-independent neural network description language, to configure the processor. NeuroFlow supports a number of commonly used current or conductance based neuronal models such as integrate-and-fire and Izhikevich models, and the spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) rule for learning. A 6-FPGA system can simulate a network of up to ~600,000 neurons and can achieve a real-time performance of 400,000 neurons. Using one FPGA, NeuroFlow delivers a speedup of up to 33.6 times the speed of an 8-core processor, or 2.83 times the speed of GPU-based platforms. With high flexibility and throughput, NeuroFlow provides a viable environment for large-scale neural network simulation

    Optimizing energy-efficiency for multi-core packet processing systems in a compiler framework

    Network applications become increasingly computation-intensive and the amount of traffic soars unprecedentedly nowadays. Multi-core and multi-threaded techniques are thus widely employed in packet processing system to meet the changing requirement. However, the processing power cannot be fully utilized without a suitable programming environment. The compilation procedure is decisive for the quality of the code. It can largely determine the overall system performance in terms of packet throughput, individual packet latency, core utilization and energy efficiency. The thesis investigated compilation issues in networking domain first, particularly on energy consumption. And as a cornerstone for any compiler optimizations, a code analysis module for collecting program dependency is presented and incorporated into a compiler framework. With that dependency information, a strategy based on graph bi-partitioning and mapping is proposed to search for an optimal configuration in a parallel-pipeline fashion. The energy-aware extension is specifically effective in enhancing the energy-efficiency of the whole system. Finally, a generic evaluation framework for simulating the performance and energy consumption of a packet processing system is given. It accepts flexible architectural configuration and is capable of performingarbitrary code mapping. The simulation time is extremely short compared to full-fledged simulators.     Toward Automating Web Protocol Configuration for a Programmable Logic Controller Emulator

    Industrial Control Systems (ICS) remain vulnerable through attack vectors that exist within programmable logic controllers (PLC). PLC emulators used as honeypots can provide insight into these vulnerabilities. Honeypots can sometimes deter attackers from real devices and log activity. A variety of PLC emulators exist, but require manual figuration to change their PLC pro le. This limits their flexibility for deployment. An automated process for configuring PLC emulators can open the door for emulation of many types of PLCs. This study investigates the feasibility of creating such a process. The research creates an automated process for figuring the web protocols of a Koyo DirectLogic PLC. The figuration process is a software program that collects information about the PLC and creates a behavior pro le. A generic web server then references that pro le in order to respond properly to requests. To measure the ability of the process, the resulting emulator is evaluated based on response accuracy and timing accuracy. In addition, the figuration time of the process itself is measured. For the accuracy measurements a workload of 1000 GET requests are sent to the index.html page of the PLC, and then to the emulator. These requests are sent at two rates: Slow and PLC Break. The emulator responses are then compared to those of the PLC baseline. Results show that the process completes in 9.8 seconds, on average. The resulting emulator responds with 97.79% accuracy across all trials. It responds 1.3 times faster than the real PLC at the Slow response rate, and 1.4 times faster at the PLC Break rate. Results indicate that the automated process is able to create an emulator with an accuracy that is comparable to a manually figured emulator. This supports the hypothesis that creating an automated process for figuring a PLC emulator with a high level of accuracy is feasible
