OFMTutor: An operator function model intelligent tutoring system

    Get PDF
The design, implementation, and evaluation of an Operator Function Model intelligent tutoring system (OFMTutor) is presented. OFMTutor is intended to provide intelligent tutoring in the context of complex dynamic systems for which an operator function model (OFM) can be constructed. The human operator's role in such complex, dynamic, and highly automated systems is that of a supervisory controller whose primary responsibilities are routine monitoring and fine-tuning of system parameters and occasional compensation for system abnormalities. The automated systems must support the human operator. One potentially useful form of support is the use of intelligent tutoring systems to teach the operator about the system and how to function within that system. Previous research on intelligent tutoring systems (ITS) is considered. The proposed design for OFMTutor is presented, and an experimental evaluation is described

A Thick Industrial Design Studio Curriculum

This presentation was part of the session : Pedagogy: Procedures, Scaffolds, Strategies, Tactics24th National Conference on the Beginning Design StudentThis paper describes an industrial design studio course based in a private university in Izmir, Turkey where second year industrial design students, for the first time, engage in a studio project. The design studio course emphasises three distinct areas of competence in designing that are the focus of the curriculum. They are; design process: the intellectual act of solving a design problem; design concept: the imagination and sensibility to conceive of appropriate design ideas; and presentation: the ability to clearly and evocatively communicate design concepts. The studio is 'thick' with materials, tasks and activities that are intentionally sequenced to optimise learning in a process that is known as educational 'scaffolding.' The idea of a process--a patient journey toward it's destination, is implicit in the studio that is full of opportunities for reflection-in-action. A significant feature is the importance placed on drawing and model making. An exemplary design process should show evidence of 'breadth'--meaning a wide search for solutions where a range of alternatives explored throughout; followed by an incremental refinement of the chosen solution where elements of the final design concept are developed thoroughly and in detail--called 'depth.' Learning to design is predicated on an engagement in and manipulation of the elements of the design problem. Evidence of that learning will be found by examining the physical materials and results of the design process. The assessment criteria are published with the brief at the outset of design project and outcomes are spelt out at the end. Students are remind throughout project of the criteria, which is to say they are reminded of pedagogical aims of the studio. Assessment criteria are detailed and the advantages of summative assessment are described

E-Learning and Teaching is a modern method of teaching and learning based on information technology. In particular, during the industrial revolution 4.0, information technology and digitization develop strongly and rapidly in all countries, which make the traditional teaching method lose the leading position in modern education. Because E-Learning and Teaching allows the maximum exploitation of its features and utility in online teaching and learning, reduces training costs, time and brings convenience for learners anytime and anywhere. Recognizing the importance of online teaching and learning trends in the industrial revolution 4.0, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education (HCMUTE) has applied and implemented the E-Learning and Teaching system on the basis of teaching management systems such as LMS/FHQLMS and Google Classroom. This article contributes to describing the current situation and difficulties in the implementation of E-Learning and Teaching, aiming to build an E-Learning and Teaching application on a large scale in HCMUTE in particular and Vietnam in general. Learning during the COVID-19 pandemic has an impact on students’ learning outcomes. Observation results in SMP 2 Dawe Kudus showed that students’ learning outcomes in science subjects are still low. This school was chosen because of the location of the school in remote areas which resulted in not optimal use of digital devices for assessment in learning.  The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics, feasibility, and profile of learning outcomes using digital science scrapbooks as authentic assessment to measure the learning outcomes of junior high school students on the theme of Additives and Addictive Substances. This study used a Research and Development (RD) design with ADDIE model. The science digital scrapbook as an authentic assessment developed in this study was declared feasible to use based on the assessment of material experts and evaluations. The reliability coefficient values obtained from small-scale tests for essay questions, attitude assessment instruments, and skills assessment instruments were obtained 0.62; 0.84; and 0.38. Students’ learning outcomes measured using a digital science scrapbook as an authentic assessment showed 83.3% of students were complete in the realm of knowledge, 100% completed in the realm of attitudes, and 100% completed in the realm of skills. The conclusion of this study is science digital scrapbook as an authentic assessment developed in this study was feasible to be used to measure the learning outcomes of junior high school students on additives and addictive substances concep

Enhancing the Digital Backchannel Backstage on the Basis of a Formative User Study

Contemporary higher education with its large audiences suffers from passivity of students. Enhancing the classroom with a digital backchannel can contribute to establishing and fostering active participation of and collaboration among students in the lecture. Therefore, we conceived the digital backchannel Backstage specifically tailored for the use in large classes. At an early phase of development we tested its core functionalities in a small-scale user study. The aim of the study was to gain first impressions of its adoption, and also to form a basis for further steps in the conception of Backstage. Regarding adoption we particularly focused on how Backstage influences the participants' questioning behavior, a salient aspect in learning. We observed that during the study much more questions were uttered on Backstage than being asked without backchannel support. Regarding the further development of Backstage we capitalized on the participants' usability feedback. The key of the refinement is the integration of presentation slides in Backstage, which leads to an interesting reconsideration of the user interactions of Backstage

Developing Virtual Physics Practicum Module of Optic Based on Guided Inquiry to Improve Students' Science Process Skills

Science process skills are one of the competencies that must be possessed by students after attending physics learning. Science process skills can be obtained by practicum activities both in person and virtually. However, the availability of virual physics practicum modules is not widely available in schools, even though there are some materials that cannot be done directly.  Therefore, a guided inquiry-based virtual practicum module is needed to improve students' science process skills in learning physics. This development research using 4-D method (Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate). In the development of this module, the researchers only come to the third stage of the four stages. Validation results from experts get an average score of 86% interpretation which means that the module is included in the criteria worthy of use in learning even with the notes of experts to revise some of the components present in this module so that this module complies with existing standards. The results of the analysis of student responses to the practicum module obtained a total average of 85% with the category is "strong." This shows almost all the students gave a positive response to the virtual practicum module based guided inquiry. The development of virtual practicum modules based guided inquiry can improve science process skills of the students, with the average score of students‟ science process skills before using a virtual practicum module based guided inquiry of 2.63 and the average score of students‟ science process skills after using a virtual practicum module based guided inquiry of 3.3
