    Total algorithms

    We define the notion of total algorithms for networks of processes. A total algorithm enforces that a "decision" is taken by a subset of the processes, and that participation of all processes is required to reach this decision. Total algorithms are an important building block in the design of distributed algorithms. For some important network control problems it can be shown that an algorithm solving it is necessarily total, and that any total algorithm can solve the problem. We study some total algorithms for a variety of network topologies. Constructions are shown to derive algorithms for Mutual Exclusion, Election, and Distributed Infirnum Approximation from arbitrary total algorithms. The paper puts many results and paradigms about designing distributed algorithms in a general framework. This report oulines several other works of the author. Total algorithms, their properties, and some additional examples, as well as traversal algorithms and the time complexity of distributed algorithms are studied in [Tel94, Chap.6]. The construction of algorithms for distributed infirnum approximation is treated in [CBT94, Tel86] and [Tel91, Sec. 4.1]

    Self-stabilizing K-out-of-L exclusion on tree network

    In this paper, we address the problem of K-out-of-L exclusion, a generalization of the mutual exclusion problem, in which there are \ell units of a shared resource, and any process can request up to k\mathtt k units (1k1\leq\mathtt k\leq\ell). We propose the first deterministic self-stabilizing distributed K-out-of-L exclusion protocol in message-passing systems for asynchronous oriented tree networks which assumes bounded local memory for each process.Comment: 15 page

    Distributed match-making

    In many distributed computing environments, processes are concurrently executed by nodes in a store- and-forward communication network. Distributed control issues as diverse as name server, mutual exclusion, and replicated data management involve making matches between such processes. We propose a formal problem called distributed match-making as the generic paradigm. Algorithms for distributed match-making are developed and the complexity is investigated in terms of messages and in terms of storage needed. Lower bounds on the complexity of distributed match-making are established. Optimal algorithms, or nearly optimal algorithms, are given for particular network topologies

    Self-stabilizing tree algorithms

    Designers of distributed algorithms have to contend with the problem of making the algorithms tolerant to several forms of coordination loss, primarily faulty initialization. The processes in a distributed system do not share a global memory and can only get a partial view of the global state. Transient failures in one part of the system may go unnoticed in other parts and thus cause the system to go into an illegal state. If the system were self-stabilizing, however, it is guaranteed that it will return to a legal state after a finite number of state transitions. This thesis presents and proves self-stabilizing algorithms for calculating tree metrics and for achieving mutual exclusion on a tree structured distributed system

    Automated Synthesis of Distributed Self-Stabilizing Protocols

    In this paper, we introduce an SMT-based method that automatically synthesizes a distributed self-stabilizing protocol from a given high-level specification and network topology. Unlike existing approaches, where synthesis algorithms require the explicit description of the set of legitimate states, our technique only needs the temporal behavior of the protocol. We extend our approach to synthesize ideal-stabilizing protocols, where every state is legitimate. We also extend our technique to synthesize monotonic-stabilizing protocols, where during recovery, each process can execute an most once one action. Our proposed methods are fully implemented and we report successful synthesis of well-known protocols such as Dijkstra's token ring, a self-stabilizing version of Raymond's mutual exclusion algorithm, ideal-stabilizing leader election and local mutual exclusion, as well as monotonic-stabilizing maximal independent set and distributed Grundy coloring

    Leader Election in Anonymous Rings: Franklin Goes Probabilistic

    We present a probabilistic leader election algorithm for anonymous, bidirectional, asynchronous rings. It is based on an algorithm from Franklin, augmented with random identity selection, hop counters to detect identity clashes, and round numbers modulo 2. As a result, the algorithm is finite-state, so that various model checking techniques can be employed to verify its correctness, that is, eventually a unique leader is elected with probability one. We also sketch a formal correctness proof of the algorithm for rings with arbitrary size
