    An object-oriented bridge among architectural styles, aspects and frameworks

    We propose an architecture-driven design approach based on the concept of proto-frameworks, aiming to provide an intermediate stage in the transition from architectural models to object-oriented frameworks or applications. The approach is based on an object-oriented materialization of domain-specific architectures derived from domain models, that is the production of concrete computational representations of abstract architectural descriptions using object-oriented technology. A proto-framework materializes, in object-oriented terms, the infrastructure required for cooperation and communication of each architectural component type. In other words, a proto-framework provides the essential abstractions to derive new applications or frameworks by inheritance from the proto-framework classes. In this case, the framework provides very abstract hooks to map specific domain components into a class hierarchy in a white-box fashion. This mapping can produce a specific application, but more important yet, it can produce new domain-specific frameworks that adopt the underlying architectural model.     Beginning in the mid-20th century, numerous studies have pointed to the limitations of the human cognitive system and provided insight into human reliance on external structures as a way to overcome these limitations. In architecture, such external representations are drawings, tables, mock-ups and other types of project documents. With the introduction of digital technology in architectural design, a new type of architectural project representation was introduced into the design process - the digital model. The development of commercial architectural design software was based on the development of both information models that support computer processing and digital representations of traditional documents. A document is a representation intended for interpretation by humans, which takes into account all the shortcomings of the human cognitive system. Its value is based on permanence and immutability. On the other hand, the digital model enables computer-based processing, and it is free from the limitations of the human cognitive system. In order for a person to understand the digital model, it is necessary to translate it into the form of a document. The fact that a human cannot directly understand a digital model reduces the impact of computer technology and saves traditional working methods. The article discusses the differences between data and information and documents and digital models and how these concepts are implemented in the current BIM technology. The overview of the international standards BIM standards is given and their impact on the use of documents and models in the BIM process has been studied

    An extensible view system for supporting the integration and interoperation of heterogeneous, autonomous, and distributed database management systems

    In this thesis the problem of integrating heterogeneous, autonomous and distributed database management systems (DBMSs) is addressed. To provide a solution, we have developed an approach, a design method, and a view system. Our approach is based on the invention of the abstract view constructs that have uniform and stable representations for supporting semantic relativism and distributed abstraction modeling. Our design method applies object-oriented techniques and software engineering concepts to manage the system complexity. Our view system has been constructed upon established experience with the development of large-scale distributed systems in a distributed object infrastructure provided by the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA). The scope of our research identifies the goals of Project Zeus in which we have created the Zeus View Mechanism ( ZVM) as the theoretical foundation of our approach. The notion of frameworks has been introduced as part of our design methodology to promote code/design reuse and enhance the portability/extensibility of the architectural design. A multidatabase system, the Zeus Multidatabase System ( ZMS), has provided a test bed for our concept. Project Zeus has exciting prospects. The foundation established in this research has created new directions in multidatabase research and will have a significant impact on future integration and interoperation technologies

    BIM adoption and implementation for architectural practices

    Severe issues about data acquisition and management arise during the design creation and development due to complexity, uncertainty and ambiguity. BIM (Building Information Modelling) is a tool for a team based lean design approach towards improved architectural practice across the supply chain. However, moving from a CAD (Computer Aided Design) approach to BIM (Building Information Modelling) represents a fundamental change for individual disciplines and the construction industry as a whole. Although BIM has been implemented by large practices, it is not widely used by SMEs (Small and Medium Sized Enterprises). Purpose: This paper aims to present a systematic approach for BIM implementation for Architectural SMEs at the organizational level Design/Methodology/Approach: The research is undertaken through a KTP (Knowledge transfer Partnership) project between the University of Salford and John McCall Architects (JMA) a SME based in Liverpool. The overall aim of the KTP is to develop lean design practice through BIM adoption. The BIM implementation approach uses a socio-technical view which does not only consider the implementation of technology but also considers the socio-cultural environment that provides the context for its implementation. The action research oriented qualitative and quantitative research is used for discovery, comparison, and experimentation as it provides �learning by doing�. Findings: The strategic approach to BIM adoption incorporated people, process and technology equally and led to capacity building through the improvements in process, technological infrastructure and upskilling of JMA staff to attain efficiency gains and competitive advantages. Originality/Value: This paper introduces a systematic approach for BIM adoption based on the action research philosophy and demonstrates a roadmap for BIM adoption at the operational level for SME companie

    When CAD (Computer Aided Design) was generally adopted in the early 1990’s, the hand drawn process was replaced with the CAD drawing but the nature of the artefacts / deliverables and the exchanges of information between disciplines remained fundamentally the same. The deliverables remained 2D representations of 3D forms and Specifications and Bill of Quantities. However, the building industry is under great pressure to provide value for money, sustainable design and construction. This has propelled the adoption of Building Information Modelling (BIM). BIM is a foundational tool for a team based lean design approach. It can enable the intelligent interrogation of design; provide a quicker and cheaper design production; better co-ordination of documentation; more effective change control; less repetition of processes; a better quality constructed product; and improved communication both for the architectural practice and across the supply chain. As BIM enables a new of working methodology, it entails the change in perceiving artefacts used and deliverables produced in the design and construction stages. In other words, defining what the informational issues are, who does what and who is responsible for what and the level of detail required at each stage in design and construction is critically important to adopt and implement BIM in the construction sector. This paper presents the key findings through the action research methodology about the change in the nature of artefacts and deliverables resulting from the BIM adoption in the KTP (Knowledge Transfer Partnership) project undertaken by the University of Salford and John McCall Architects
