Turkish teacher candidates’ perceptions of 21st century skills sufficiency
Bu araştırmada, Türkçe öğretmeni adaylarının 21. yüzyıl becerileri
yeterlilik algılarının incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Araştırmanın çalışma grubu
seçkisiz örnekleme yöntemlerinden basit seçkisiz örnekleme yoluyla
belirlenmiş olup katılımcılar; Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Üniversitesi Türkçe
Öğretmenliği Ana Bilim Dalında öğrenim gören 216 öğretmen adayından
oluşmaktadır. Tekil tarama ve nedensel karşılaştırma modeline göre
tasarlanan araştırmanın verilerinin toplanmasında, 21. Yüzyıl Becerileri
Yeterlilik Ölçeği kullanılmıştır. Araştırmadan elde edilen bulgulara göre;
This study aims to investigate the perceptions of pre-serviceTurkish
teachers regarding 21st-century skills. The study group of the research was
identified through simple random sampling and consisted of 216 pre-service
teachers studying in the Department of Turkish Teaching at Recep Tayyip
Erdoğan University. The 21st Century Skills and Competences Scale was
used in collecting the data of the study, which was designed according to the single survey and causal-comparative model. The results of the study show
that pre-service Turkish teachers’ perceptions of 21st-century competencies
are low in the dimensions of perceptions of learning and renewal skills and
life and professional skills, which are the sub-dimensions of the scale.
However, they are very low in the dimensions of information, media, and
technology. It was found that grade*gender interaction, number of
books*pages, and mother*father educational status interaction were not
effective variables for pre-service Turkish teachers’ perceptions of 21stcentury skills and competencies. Among these variables, only the variable of
the number of books read during the year was found to make a significant
difference in favour of the participants who read less than those who read a
lot in the pre-service Turkish teachers’ perceptions of competence in life and
professional skills. In terms of perceptions of competence in information,
media, and technology, participants who read moderately within a week were
found to be significantly different from those who read a lot
Competencies that Turkish teachers need to have in the 21st century
This study aims to evaluate the basic competencies that Turkish teachers should have in the 21st
century from the perspective of pre-service teachers. The study was conducted with the case study
design of the qualitative research methods. The readily available convenience sampling, which is
one of the purposeful sampling methods was used to determine the study group. Participants
determined through this sampling consist of 34 pre-service teachers studying their third years at
Turkish Language Teaching Department of Recep Tayyip Erdogan University in the spring semester
of the 2018 academic year. The data were collected through a semi-structured interview form
consisting of two open-ended questions in the study, and the interviews lasted 30 minutes. The data obtained from the research were evaluated by content analysis. As a result of the study, the
competencies that Turkish teachers should have in the 21st century were grouped under two main
themes as basic competencies and basic values. Basic competencies are divided into two subthemes: personal competences and special field competencies. As a result of the study, creativity
and innovativeness were highlighted in the personal competencies that Turkish teachers should
have, while the ability to use Turkish effectively, to communicate effectively in the classroom, to
create a learning environment with a collaborative and interdisciplinary perspective come to the
forefront in the special field competencies. Additionally, the most frequently repeated competencies
were Turkish language teachers' having the technological literacy skills of the age and their being
able to adapt these skills to the Turkish courses. When the results regarding the basic values that a
Turkish teacher should have were examined; the values of love, respect and patriotism came to the
fore. With reference to these results; It can be said that the Turkish teacher profile who is creative
and innovative and has universal values has been reveale
Factors influencing the use of privacy settings in location-based social networks
The growth of location-based social networks (LBSN) such as Facebook and Twitter has been rapid in recent years. In LBSNs, users provide location information on public profiles that potentially can be used in harmful ways. LBSNs have privacy settings that allow users to control the privacy level of their profiles, thus limiting access to location information by other users; but for various reasons users seldom make use of them. Using the protection motivation theory (PMT) as a theoretical lens, this dissertation examines whether users can be encouraged to use LBSN privacy settings through fear appeals. Fear appeals have been used in various studies to arouse fear in users, in order to motivate them to comply to an adaptive behaviour through the threat of impending danger. However, within the context of social networking, it is not yet clear how fear-inducing arguments will ultimately influence the use of privacy settings by users. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of fear appeals on user compliance, with recommendations to enact the use of privacy settings toward the alleviation of privacy threats. Using a survey methodology, 248 social-network users completed an instrument measuring the variables conceptualized by PMT. Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) was used to test the validity and reliability, and to analyze the data. Analysis of the responses show that PMT provides an explanation for the intention to use privacy settings by social-network users. Risk susceptibility, response efficacy, self-efficacy and response cost were found to have a positive impact on the intention to use privacy settings, while sharing benefits and maladaptive behaviours were found to have a negative impact on the intention to use privacy settings. However, risk severity and fear were not found to be significant predictors of the intention to use privacy settings. This study contributes to existing research on PMT in a sense that fear appeal should focus more on coping appraisal, rather than on threat appraisal which is consistent with the results of most studies on protection motivation
