Customer loyalty in non-life insurance: antecedents, determinants and future directions
Insurance is a very important industry for the development of contemporary economies and societies, characterized by a historically high level of product cancellation which generates very significant annual losses for insurance companies. Nevertheless, it has received little attention from academia, considering the scarcity of scientific publications.
The aim of this thesis is to develop scientific knowledge concerning product cancellation and customer loyalty in insurance throughout three scientific articles. The first article characterizes the current state of research on cancellation of non-life insurance, identifying the most important lines of research. The second article applies the previous conclusions to a real case, demonstrating the main factors associated with product cancellation. From the analysis of the results of this study, it is observed that the profile of customers, the characteristics of policies, and the typology of intermediaries are central factors to understand the cancellation of insurance. This article also highlights the responsibility of insurance companies themselves for product cancellation, given their strategic focus on attracting new customers, relegating retention efforts to a lower priority.
In the third article, the main avenues for researching customer loyalty in insurance, and the industry challenges associated with its current and future management, are presented with an innovative application of Vosviewer and Scimat bibliometric techniques. This research highlights the strategic role of data management in companiesâ effective management of customers.
Globally, this thesis details the importance of reformulating processes in insurance to improve customer experiences, and the centrality of new technologies such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things and the deployment of analytical models, fuelled by big data, to improve customer loyalty in insurance and, consequently, to reduce insurance cancellation

ESSAYS IN THE SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH AND PUBLIC HEALTH POLICY
There is broad-based qualitative evidence arguing that stress is a public health concern. In the search for causality however, economists investigating public health concerns are often limited to a narrow subset of socio-economic status (SES) factors which are not well suited to the evaluation of stress/health effects. As a result, economists have a difficult time answering the âhowâ and âwhyâ questions which emerge from the well-respected SES/health gradient. This dissertation focuses on a subset of stressors credibly affiliated with SES to address two pathways underling the established SES/Health gradient. Chapter 2 uses the Panel Study of Income Dynamics to test financial strain (FS) and high-frequency job switching (JS) effects on health. Using dynamic panel random effects ordered probit specifications, we find support for FS and JS effects on self-assessed health status. Of course, policy recommendations that follow are unimaginably vast. In chapters 3 and 4, we focus on breaking down the grand policy consideration of reducing financial strain into politically viable actions. First, we develop and test a pragmatic policy analysis method against observable outcomes from two health policies made by the state of Alaska. In terms of reducing individual year-over-year health insurance premium volatility, the presented method performs better than the commonly relied upon actuarial methods. The implication is that adoption of such analytical methods may result in improved population health. Chapter 4 evaluates the effects of childhood retrospective circumstances on the experiences of adult financial strain. Results suggest school experiences, feelings of loneliness, parental work habits, and maternal relationships are key predictors of adult financial strain
Leveraging New Technologies and Interdisciplinarity to Study Political Behavior, Attitudes, and Beliefs
I make use of new technological and scholarly developments to study political sentiments and behavior in three independent papers. In my lead paper, I address an important consequence of political deepfakes (i.e., computer-manipulated video misinformation): does the provision of information about deepfakes cause people to disbelieve real political videos? Through a set of online survey experiments, I find that information that is typical of news coverage of deepfakes induces people to disbelieve real political information. My second paper uses new social media datasets to address pressing questions about how organized American far-right groups (e.g., neo-Nazis, white supremacists, etc.) recruit new members, and whether the rise of Trump was used as a catalyst in far-right recruitment efforts. I made use of prior sociological and anthropological research that found that far-right music scenes (featuring bands with such names as Aryan Terrorism) are a key part of day-to-day functioning of the overwhelming majority of far-right hate groups in the United States. As such, I made use of public databases of song listenership on the music social network, Last.fm, before and after Trump events. I find that online friends of frequent listeners of hate music were more likely to increase their levels of hate music listenership after Trump-related events (e.g., xenophobic tweets, primary election victories, etc.). Finally, in my third paper, I leverage new theoretical frameworks in the cognitive sciences and the growth of large-scale, data-driven voter mobilization programs among non-profit organizations to address the puzzle of âvoting habits.â Namely, prior research provides strong empirical evidence that voting in one election makes the average individual more likely to vote in a subsequent election, but this kind of turnout persistence does not comport with habit as it is defined in psychological sciences (elections happen too infrequently and voting is never an automatic behavior). So, in my third paper, I apply Duckworth and Grossâs (2020) Process Model of Behavior Change to turnout persistence to bridge the gap between classic economic models of voter turnout and the large body of rigorous empirical evidence showing turnout persistence. I evaluate the concrete predictions made by this model in a novel dataset of ~1.8 million voters across 9 different independent experiments

Field Experiments in Labor Economics
We overview the use of field experiments in labor economics. We showcase studies that highlight the central advantages of this methodology, which include: (i) using economic theory to design the null and alternative hypotheses; (ii) engineering exogenous variation in real world economic environments to establish causal relations and learning about the underlying mechanisms; and (iii) engaging in primary data collection and often working closely with practitioners. To highlight the potential for field experiments to inform issues in labor economics, we organize our discussion around the individual life cycle. We therefore consider field experiments related to the accumulation of human capital, the demand and supply of labor, behavior within firms, and close with a brief discussion of the nascent literature of field experiments related to household decision-making.
A Survey of Systemic Risk Analytics
We provide a survey of 31 quantitative measures of systemic risk in the economics and finance literature, chosen to span key themes and issues in systemic risk measurement and management. We motivate these measures from the supervisory, research, and data perspectives in the main text and present concise definitions of each risk measureâincluding required inputs, expected outputs, and data requirementsâin an extensive Supplemental Appendix. To encourage experimentation and innovation among as broad an audience as possible, we have developed an open-source MatlabÂź library for most of the analytics surveyed, which, once tested, will be accessible through the Office of Financial Research (OFR) at http://www.treasury.gov/initiatives/wsr/ofr/Pages/default.aspx.United States.
