    Signal processing architectures for automotive high-resolution MIMO radar systems

    To date, the digital signal processing for an automotive radar sensor has been handled in an efficient way by general purpose signal processors and microcontrollers. However, increasing resolution requirements for automated driving on the one hand, as well as rapidly growing numbers of manufactured sensors on the other hand, can provoke a paradigm change in the near future. The design and development of highly specialized hardware accelerators could become a viable option - at least for the most demanding processing steps with data rates of several gigabits per second. In this work, application-specific signal processing architectures for future high-resolution multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) radar sensors are designed, implemented, investigated and optimized. A focus is set on real-time performance such that even sophisticated algorithms can be computed sufficiently fast. The full processing chain from the received baseband signals to a list of detections is considered, comprising three major steps: Spectrum analysis, target detection and direction of arrival estimation. The developed architectures are further implemented on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) and important measurements like resource consumption, power dissipation or data throughput are evaluated and compared with other examples from literature. A substantial dataset, based on more than 3600 different parametrizations and variants, has been established with the help of a model-based design space exploration and is provided as part of this work. Finally, an experimental radar sensor has been built and is used under real-world conditions to verify the effectiveness of the proposed signal processing architectures.Bisher wurde die digitale Signalverarbeitung für automobile Radarsensoren auf eine effiziente Art und Weise von universell verwendbaren Mikroprozessoren bewältigt. Jedoch können steigende Anforderungen an das Auflösungsvermögen für hochautomatisiertes Fahren einerseits, sowie schnell wachsende Stückzahlen produzierter Sensoren andererseits, einen Paradigmenwechsel in naher Zukunft bewirken. Die Entwicklung von hochgradig spezialisierten Hardwarebeschleunigern könnte sich als eine praktikable Alternative etablieren - zumindest für die anspruchsvollsten Rechenschritte mit Datenraten von mehreren Gigabits pro Sekunde. In dieser Arbeit werden anwendungsspezifische Signalverarbeitungsarchitekturen für zukünftige, hochauflösende, MIMO Radarsensoren entworfen, realisiert, untersucht und optimiert. Der Fokus liegt dabei stets auf der Echtzeitfähigkeit, sodass selbst anspruchsvolle Algorithmen in einer ausreichend kurzen Zeit berechnet werden können. Die komplette Signalverarbeitungskette, beginnend von den empfangenen Signalen im Basisband bis hin zu einer Liste von Detektion, wird in dieser Arbeit behandelt. Die Kette gliedert sich im Wesentlichen in drei größere Teilschritte: Spektralanalyse, Zieldetektion und Winkelschätzung. Des Weiteren werden die entwickelten Architekturen auf einem FPGA implementiert und wichtige Kennzahlen wie Ressourcenverbrauch, Stromverbrauch oder Datendurchsatz ausgewertet und mit anderen Beispielen aus der Literatur verglichen. Ein umfangreicher Datensatz, welcher mehr als 3600 verschiedene Parametrisierungen und Varianten beinhaltet, wurde mit Hilfe einer modellbasierten Entwurfsraumexploration erstellt und ist in dieser Arbeit enthalten. Schließlich wurde ein experimenteller Radarsensor aufgebaut und dazu benutzt, die entworfenen Signalverarbeitungsarchitekturen unter realen Umgebungsbedingungen zu verifizieren

    Efficient multiplier-less VLSI architectures for folded pipelined complex FFT core

    Fast Fourier transform (FFT) has become ubiquitous in many engineering applications. FFT is one of the most employed blocks in many communication and signal processing systems. Efficient algorithms are being designed to improve the architecture of FFT. Higher radix FFT algorithms have the traditional advantage of using less number of computational elements and are more suitable for calculating FFT of long data sequence. Among the different proposed algorithms, the split-radix FFT has shown considerable improvement in terms of reducing hardware complexity of the architecture compared to radix-2 and radix-4 FFT algorithms. Here radix-4, radix-8, and split-radix algorithms have been used in the design of different proposed complex FFT cores. The growing popularity of adopting virtual instrumentation (modular, customizable, software-defined instrumentation) has only became possible due to the use of LabVIEW with a highly interactive process known as graphical system design. The CompactRIO programmable automation controller is an advanced embedded control and data acquisition system designed for applications that require high performance and reliability. The work explains the real-time implementation of 256-point FFT and finding the power spectrum using LabVIEW and CompactRIO. New distributed arithmetic (NEDA) is one of the most used techniques in implementing multiplier-less architectures of many digital systems. In this thesis, four architectures for different FFT cores have been proposed: • Real-time implementation of FFT using CompactRIO • 32-Point Complex FFT Core Using Split-Radix Algorithm • 64-Point Complex FFT Core Using Radix-4 Algorithm • 64-Point Complex FFT Core Using Radix-8 Algorithm The proposed designs have implemented in both FPGA as well as ASIC design flows. 180nm process technology is being used for ASIC implementation. The results show the improvements of proposed designs compared to the other existing architectures

    Algorithms and VLSI architectures for parametric additive synthesis

    A parametric additive synthesis approach to sound synthesis is advantageous as it can model sounds in a large scale manner, unlike the classical sinusoidal additive based synthesis paradigms. It is known that a large body of naturally occurring sounds are resonant in character and thus fit the concept well. This thesis is concerned with the computational optimisation of a super class of form ant synthesis which extends the sinusoidal parameters with a spread parameter known as band width. Here a modified formant algorithm is introduced which can be traced back to work done at IRCAM, Paris. When impulse driven, a filter based approach to modelling a formant limits the computational work-load. It is assumed that the filter's coefficients are fixed at initialisation, thus avoiding interpolation which can cause the filter to become chaotic. A filter which is more complex than a second order section is required. Temporal resolution of an impulse generator is achieved by using a two stage polyphase decimator which drives many filterbanks. Each filterbank describes one formant and is composed of sub-elements which allow variation of the formant’s parameters. A resource manager is discussed to overcome the possibility of all sub- banks operating in unison. All filterbanks for one voice are connected in series to the impulse generator and their outputs are summed and scaled accordingly. An explorative study of number systems for DSP algorithms and their architectures is investigated. I invented a new theoretical mechanism for multi-level logic based DSP. Its aims are to reduce the number of transistors and to increase their functionality. A review of synthesis algorithms and VLSI architectures are discussed in a case study between a filter based bit-serial and a CORDIC based sinusoidal generator. They are both of similar size, but the latter is always guaranteed to be stable

Programa de Pós-Graduação em Engenharia Elétrica.Esta dissertação apresenta uma implementação em uma FPGA (Arranjo de Portas Programáveis em Campo - em inglês, Field Programmable Gate Array de um equalizador adaptativo que utiliza o algoritmo LMS trigonométrico. Este algoritmo utiliza variáveis trigonométricas, que são relacionadas monotonicamente aos coeficientes do equalizador. O algoritmo LMS trigonométrico é especialmente apropriado para uma realização utilizando processadores CORDIC (Computador Digital de Rotação de Coordenadas - em inglês, Coordinate Rotation Digital Computer, já que estes calculam simultaneamente as funções trigonométricas necessárias às operações de filtragem e adaptação dos coeficientes. A utilização deste algoritmo impõe a necessidade da definição de um hipercubo, no qual deve estar contido o ponto de mínimo da função objetivo (potência do erro entre o sinal desejado e a saída do equalizador). A literatura disponível não é clara quanto à definição deste hipercubo. Esta dissertação propõe a adoção do procedimento multisplit para facilitar a definição desse hipercubo. Simulações realizadas indicam que a utilização do procedimento multisplit permite que o algoritmo LMS trigonométrico alcance a convergência em uma variedade de canais sem a necessidade de uma busca exaustiva dos valores das coordenadas do hipercubo

    Automatic transmit power control for power efficient communications in UAS

    Nowadays, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) have become one of the most popular tools that can be used in commercial, scientific, agricultural and military applications. As drones become faster, smaller and cheaper, with the ability to add payloads, the usage of the drone can be versatile. In most of the cases, unmanned aerials systems (UAS) are equipped with a wireless communication system to establish a link with the ground control station to transfer the control commands, video stream, and payload data. However, with the limited onboard calculation resources in the UAS, and the growing size and volume of the payload data, computational complex signal processing such as deep learning cannot be easily done on the drone. Hence, in many drone applications, the UAS is just a tool for capturing and storing data, and then the data is post-processed off-line in a more powerful computing device. The other solution is to stream payload data to the ground control station (GCS) and let the powerful computer on the ground station to handle these data in real-time. With the development of communication techniques such as orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmissions, it is possible to increase the spectral efficiency over large bandwidths and consequently achieve high transmission rates. However, the drone and the communication system are usually being designed separately, which means that regardless of the situation of the drone, the communication system is working independently to provide the data link. Consequently, by taking into account the position of the drone, the communication system has some room to optimize the link budget efficiency. In this master thesis, a power-efficient wireless communication downlink for UAS has been designed. It is achieved by developing an automatic transmit power control system and a custom OFDM communication system. The work has been divided into three parts: research of the drone communication system, an optimized communication system design and finally, FPGA implementation. In the first part, an overview on commercial drone communication schemes is presented and discussed. The advantages and disadvantages shown are the source of inspiration for improvement. With these ideas, an optimized scheme is presented. In the second part, an automatic transmit power control system for UAV wireless communication and a power-efficient OFDM downlink scheme are proposed. The automatic transmit power control system can estimate the required power level by the relative position between the drone and the GCS and then inform the system to adjust the power amplifier (PA) gain and power supply settings. To obtain high power efficiency for different output power levels, a searching strategy has been applied to the PA testbed to find out the best voltage supply and gain configurations. Besides, the OFDM signal generation developed in Python can encode data bytes to the baseband signal for testing purpose. Digital predistortion (DPD) linearization has been included in the transmitter’s design to guarantee the signal linearity. In the third part, two core algorithms: IFFT and LUT-based DPD, have been implemented in the FPGA platform to meet the real-time and high-speed I/O requirements. By using the high-level synthesis design process provided by Xilinx Corp, the algorithms are implemented as reusable IP blocks. The conclusion of the project is given in the end, including the summary of the proposed drone communication system and envisioning possible future lines of research

    Direct digital synthesizers : theory, design and applications

    Traditional designs of high bandwidth frequency synthesizers employ the use of a phase-locked-loop (PLL). A direct digital synthesizer (DDS) provides many significant advantages over the PLL approaches. Fast settling time, sub-Hertz frequency resolution, continuous-phase switching response and low phase noise are features easily obtainable in the DDS systems. Although the principle of the DDS has been known for many years, the DDS did not play a dominant role in wideband frequency generation until recent years. Earlier DDSs were limited to produce narrow bands of closely spaced frequencies, due to limitations of digital logic and D/A-converter technologies. Recent advantages in integrated circuit (IC) technologies have brought about remarkable progress in this area. By programming the DDS, adaptive channel bandwidths, modulation formats, frequency hopping and data rates are easily achieved. This is an important step towards a "software-radio" which can be used in various systems. The DDS could be applied in the modulator or demodulator in the communication systems. The applications of DDS are restricted to the modulator in the base station. The aim of this research was to find an optimal front-end for a transmitter by focusing on the circuit implementations of the DDS, but the research also includes the interface to baseband circuitry and system level design aspects of digital communication systems. The theoretical analysis gives an overview of the functioning of DDS, especially with respect to noise and spurs. Different spur reduction techniques are studied in detail. Four ICs, which were the circuit implementations of the DDS, were designed. One programmable logic device implementation of the CORDIC based quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) modulator was designed with a separate D/A converter IC. For the realization of these designs some new building blocks, e.g. a new tunable error feedback structure and a novel and more cost-effective digital power ramp generator, were developed.reviewe

    Design and Implementation of a Re-Configurable Arbitrary Signal Generator and Radio Frequency Spectrum Analyser

    This research is focused on the design, simulation and implementation of a reconfigurable arbitrary signal generator and the design, simulation and implementation of a radio frequency spectrum analyser based on digital signal processing. Until recently, Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) were used to produce high performance re-configurable function and arbitrary waveform generators with comprehensive modulation capabilities. However, that situation is now changing with the availability of advanced but low cost Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), which could be used as an alternative to ASICs in these applications. The availability of high performance FPGA families opens up the opportunity to compete with ASIC solutions at a fraction of the development cost of an ASIC solution. A fast digital signal processing algorithm for digital waveform generation, using primarily but not limited to Direct Digital Synthesis (DDS) technologies, developed and implemented in a field-configurable logic, with control provided by an embedded microprocessor replacing a high cost ASIC design appeared to be a very attractive concept. This research demonstrates that such a concept is feasible in its entirety. A fully functional, low-complexity, low cost, pulse, Gaussian white noise and DDS based function and arbitrary waveform generator, capable of being amplitude, frequency and phase modulated by an internally generated or external modulating signal was implemented in a low-cost FPGA. The FPGA also included the capabilities to perform pulse width modulation and pulse delay modulation on pulse waveforms. Algorithms to up-convert the sampling rate of the external modulating signal using Cascaded Integrator Comb (CIC) filters and using interpolation method were analysed. Both solutions were implemented to compare their hardware complexities. Analysis of generating noise with user-defined distribution is presented. The ability of triggering the generator by an internally generated or an external event to generate a burst of waveforms where the time between the trigger signal and waveform output is fixed was also implemented in the FPGA. Finally, design of interface to a microprocessor to provide control of the versatile waveform generator was also included in the FPGA. This thesis summarises the literature, design considerations, simulation and implementation of the generator design. The second part of the research is focused on radio frequency spectrum analysis based on digital signal processing. Most existing spectrum analysers are analogue in nature and their complexity increases with frequency. Therefore, the possibility of using digital techniques for spectrum analysis was considered. The aim was to come up with digital system architecture for spectrum analysis and to develop and implement the new approach on a suitable digital platform. This thesis analyses the current literature on shifting algorithms to remove spurious responses and highlights its drawbacks. This thesis also analyses existing literature on quadrature receivers and presents novel adaptation of the existing architectures for application in spectrum analysis. A wide band spectrum analyser receiver with compensation for gain and phase imbalances in the Radio Frequency (RF) input range, as well as compensation for gain and phase imbalances within the Intermediate Frequency (IF) pass band complete with Resolution Band Width (RBW) filtering, Video Band Width (VBW) filtering and amplitude detection was implemented in a low cost FPGA. The ability to extract the modulating signal from a frequency or amplitude modulated RF signal was also implemented. The same family of FPGA used in the generator design was chosen to be the digital platform for this design. This research makes arguments for the new architecture and then summarises the literature, design considerations, simulation and implementation of the new digital algorithm for the radio frequency spectrum analyser
