    Get PDF
A blind algorithm for channel distortion compensation is presented which can be employed in spatial or temporal diversity receivers. The proposed technique can be used in frequency selective and frequency flat fading mobile channels, using burst transmission schemes in the first case and OFDM modulation in the second one. The algorithm is base on a deterministic criteria and is suited for estimation when short sets of data are available.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

In this thesis new systems for radio channel measurements including space and polarization dimensions are developed for studying the radio propagation in wideband mobile communication systems. Multidimensional channel characterization is required for building channel models for new systems capable of exploiting the spatial nature of the channel. It also gives insight into the dominant propagation mechanisms in complex radio environments, where their prediction is difficult, such as urban and indoor environments. The measurement systems are based on the HUT/IDC wideband radio channel sounder, which was extended to enable real-time multiple output channel measurements at practical mobile speeds at frequencies up to 18 GHz. Two dual-polarized antenna arrays were constructed for 2 GHz, having suitable properties for characterizing the 3-D spatial radio channel at both ends of a mobile communication link. These implementations and their performance analysis are presented. The usefulness of the developed measurement systems is demonstrated by performing channel measurements at 2 GHz and analyzing the experimental data. Spatial channels of both the mobile and base stations are analyzed, as well as the double-directional channel that fully characterizes the propagation between two antennas. It is shown through sample results that spatial domain channel measurements can be used to gain knowledge on the dominant propagation mechanisms or verify the current assumptions. Also new statistical information about scatterer distribution at the mobile station in urban environment is presented based on extensive real-time measurements. The developed techniques and collected experimental data form a good basis for further comparison with existing deterministic propagation models and development of new spatial channel models.reviewe

Effects of of weighted despreading sequence on CDMA performance

    Get PDF
This paper received the best paper award in the conferenceWaves of the Year 2000This paper addresses the effects of a weighted despreading sequence on the performance of a coherent receiver in a DS-CDMA system. The chip weighting waveforms used in the receiver are designed for the purpose of multiple access interference rejection by emphasizing the transitions of the received signal of interest. Since the resulting weighted despreading sequence is determined only by one parameter, this leads to easy tuning of the weighted despreading sequence in practice to achieve the best performance. The criterion of tuning the parameter is to maximize the derived signal to interference plus noise ratio of the decision variable based on the relative strength between white noise and multiple access interference. As a result, according to the proposed approach, we can reject the multiple access interference without knowing the co-user's spreading codes, timing, and phase since maximizing the signal to interference plus noise ratio in Gaussian noise minimizes the probability of error of the receiver.published_or_final_versio

The wireless access has proven its usability for reliable communication and data conveying link for a long time. The ever growing usage of wireless communications systems has been driving the research to study even faster and more interference tolerant wireless solutions. A key concept towards achieving these goals are the detailed analysis and modeling of the propagation channel. In both of these aspects the availability of reliable measurement data is a prerequisite. This thesis concentrates on contributing to the measurement system development in single- and dual-link cases as well as measurement data analysis for specific wireless systems. In the first part of the thesis the physical radiowave propagation phenomena are briefly related to the challenges of the modern wireless communication systems. Through the analysis of the propagation channel conducted earlier in the literature, the main phenomena for modeling the propagation channel are illustrated, and the current modeling approaches are described. The hardware related design challenges are described along with the recent achievements in the measurement system development. Specifically, the design of antenna arrays for estimation of the parameters of the double directional channel model is illustrated. A measurement system developed for characterizing the double directional channel in the 5.3 GHz frequency range is presented along with the evaluation of the accuracy of the measurment system for the spatial characterization. The developed measurement system is further extended to enable simultaneous, double directional dual-link propagation channel measurements, and the first directional results from a measurement campaign are presented. In the second part, the important feature of the spatial dimensionality of the propagation channel is considered through measurement data acquired using the developed measurement system. The basics of the single- and dual-link MIMO communications systems and cooperative communications are presented. The analysis of the spatial domain used in MIMO communications systems is extended to multiuser scenario. Furthermore, cooperative communications system is analyzed

On the modeling of WCDMA system performance with propagation data

The aim of this study was to develop calculation methods for estimating the most important system level performance characteristics of the WCDMA radio network (i.e. network capacity and coverage) in the presence of interference from various sources. The calculation methods described in this work enable the fast design of radio systems with a reasonable degree of accuracy, where different system parameters, propagation conditions and networks as well as frequency scenarios can be easily tested. The work also includes the development and verification of a propagation model for a microcellular environment. Traditionally, system level performance figures have been retrieved using system simulations where the radio network has been modeled as accurately as possible. This has included base stations and mobile stations, propagation models, traffic models and mobility models. Various radio resource management (RRM) algorithms, such as power controls and handovers have also been modeled. However, these system simulations are very complex and time consuming and typically the models are difficult to modify. The idea behind this work is to use the main statistical parameters retrieved from accurate, case specific propagation models and to use these statistics as input for the developed analytical radio network models. When used as output from these analytical models we are able to obtain the performance measures of the network. The specific application area for the developed methods is the evaluation of the effect of the interference from the adjacent frequency channels. Adjacent channel interference decreases the efficiency of the usage of the electromagnetic spectrum i.e. the spectral efficiency. The aim of a radio system design is to ensure that the reduction in the spectral efficiency is as low as possible. This interference may originate from the same or a different radio system and from the same or another operator's network. The strength of this interference is dependent on the system parameters and the network layout. The standard questions regarding adjacent system interference between different operators' network are what guard band is needed between the radio carriers in order to maintain the quality of the network or what are the main mobile and network parameters, such as adjacent channel emission levels or adjacent channel selectivity, required in order to achieve satisfactory network performance. With the developed method proposed here it is possible to answer these questions with reasonable accuracy. One important aspect of network performance is the radio wave propagation environment for which the radio systems are designed. This thesis presents methods evaluating radio wave propagation, especially for cases where the base station antenna is below the rooftops, i.e. in the case of microcellular network environments. The developed microcellular propagation model has been developed for network planning purposes and it has been verified using numerous field propagation measurements. The model can be used in cases where the mobile station is located either indoors or outdoors.reviewe

Joint optimization of transmission-order selection and channel allocation for bidirectional wireless links-part II: algorithms

This is the second in a two-part series of papers on transmission order (TO) optimization in the presence of channel allocation (CA), i.e., joint optimization of the TO selection and CA problem, for interfering bidirectional wireless links. Part I of this paper thoroughly analyzes the joint optimization problem from a game theoretic perspective for a general deterministic setting. Here in Part II, we present novel distributed and centralized CA-TO algorithms, together with their performance analysis, for Device-to-Device (D2D) communications underlaying cellular networks based on the findings in Part I of this paper. Here, TO is a novel dimension for optimization. In Part II, we propose and analyze novel two distributed and one centralized joint CA-TO algorithms. Our investigations show that: i) our algorithms contain many of the existing TO algorithms and CA algorithms as its special cases and can thus be considered as a general framework for the joint CA and TO optimization. The computer simulations for TDD-based D2D communications underlaying cellular network show that the proposed distributed and centralized joint CA-TO algorithms remarkably outperform the reference algorithms.IEEE Communications Societ

Soft detection and decoding in wideband CDMA systems

    Get PDF
A major shift is taking place in the world of telecommunications towards a communications environment where a range of new data services will be available for mobile users. This shift is already visible in several areas of wireless communications, including cellular systems, wireless LANs, and satellite systems. The provision of flexible high-quality wireless data services requires a new approach on both the radio interface specification and the design and the implementation of the various transceiver algorithms. On the other hand, when the processing power available in the receivers increases, more complex receiver algorithms become feasible. The general problem addressed in this thesis is the application of soft detection and decoding algorithms in the wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) receivers, both in the base stations and in the mobile terminals, so that good performance is achieved but that the computational complexity remains acceptable. In particular, two applications of soft detection and soft decoding are studied: coded multiuser detection in the CDMA base station and improved RAKE-based reception employing soft detection in the mobile terminal. For coded multiuser detection, we propose a novel receiver structure that utilizes the decoding information for multiuser detection. We analyze the performance and derive lower bounds for the capacity of interference cancellation CDMA receivers when using channel coding to improve the reliability of tentative decisions. For soft decision and decoding techniques in the CDMA downlink, we propose a modified maximal ratio combining (MRC) scheme that is more suitable for RAKE receivers in WCDMA mobile terminals than the conventional MRC scheme. We also introduce an improved soft-output RAKE detector that is especially suitable for low spreading gains and high-order modulation schemes. Finally we analyze the gain obtained through the use of Brennan's MRC scheme and our modified MRC scheme. Throughout this thesis Bayesian networks are utilized to develop algorithms for soft detection and decoding problems. This approach originates from the initial stages of this research, where Bayesian networks and algorithms using such graphical models (e.g. the so-called sum-product algorithm) were used to identify new receiver algorithms. In the end, this viewpoint may not be easily noticeable in the final form of the algorithms, mainly because the practical efficiency considerations forced us to select simplified variants of the algorithms. However, this viewpoint is important to emphasize the underlying connection between the apparently different soft detection and decision algorithms described in this thesis.reviewe
