[Review of] Angus Calder, Jack Mapanje, and Cosmo Pieterse, eds. Summer Fires, New Poetry of Africa

    Get PDF
When Angus Calder, Jack Mapanje, and Cosmo Pieterse sat as judges for the BBC Arts and Africa Poetry Award of 1981, they were faced with some 3,000 entries from more than 700 contestants from which they were to award three cash prizes and a number of book prizes. In the introduction to the book which they subsequently edited, consisting of eighty-two poems from forty-five writers from thirteen countries in Africa, they explain that they had told all entrants they were looking for originality and imagination as well as evidence of technical skill. They state, also, that they strove to deliberate dispassionately ... without regard to geographical origin or to the author\u27s previous reputations. They conclude that the book represents the remarkable vitality of verse in English all over the continent, and leave their choices of poems to speak for themselves, as they do so well

The Impact of Honor Codes on Academic Cheating Within Liberal Arts Colleges

    Get PDF
Many researchers study the subject of collegiate cheating by focusing on demographic characteristics of cheaters at schools of varying sizes. Other researchers examine whether collegiate honor codes can abate rampant cheating. A third group studies whether perceptions of what students believe to be cheating behaviors affects actual cheating. This paper incorporates previous research and develops a model of academic cheating based on three sets of incentives - moral, social and economic – and how they affect self-reported cheating behaviors at liberal arts colleges. An on-line survey was administered to students from three liberal arts colleges in spring 2008. The nearly 700 respondents provide a robust data set with nearly half of the respondents coming from institutions with honor codes in place. Econometric models using ordinary least squares highlight the determinants of cheating and whether honor codes are efficacious. The results will be useful in the national dialogue regarding college cheating

Evaluating the Impact of Charter Schools on Student Achievement: A Longitudinal Look at the Great Lakes States

    Get PDF
This study looks at student achievement in math and reading in charter and traditional public schools over a five-year period in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin. The primary finding is that student achievement in charter schools in these six states is lower than in traditional public schools. The study also finds, however, that student achievement in charter schools is improving over time

Selection Criteria for the Honors Program in Azerbaijan

    Get PDF
Designing effective selection procedures for honors programs is always a challenging task. In Azerbaijan, selection is based on three main criteria: (i) student performance in the centralized university admission test; (ii) student performance in the first year of studies; and (iii) student performance in the honors program selection test. This research identifies criteria most crucial in predicting student success in honors programs. An analysis was first conducted for all honors students. Results indicate that all three criteria used in the selection process are highly significant predictors of student success in the program. This same analysis was then applied separately for each degree program, demonstrating that not all criteria are significant for some programs. These results suggest that creating differentiated selection procedures for different degree programs might be more efficient

Comparison of CrAlN layers obtained with one (CrAl) or two targets (Cr and Al) by magnetron sputtering

The authors would like to thank the Regional Council of Burgundy, France for its funding and Michael Walock for his help in English revisionsThe aim of this study is to compare the properties of CrAlN coatings obtained by magnetron sputtering with one (CrAl) or two targets (Cr and Al). The influence of parameters such as the target bias voltage, the working pressure, the deposition time and the bias voltage applied on the Cr or Al targets on the properties of the layers was studied. We characterized the films by X-ray Diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy, coupled with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy, nanoindentation and their residual stresses were also determined. The optimal films obtained with both methods are well crystallized, well-adherent to the substrate, and contained similar amounts of Al (20–30 at.%). The optimal coatings synthesized with one target presented properties not as good as those realized with two targets. Nevertheless, films made with one target showed a lower frictional coefficient probably due to composition control. The lack of compositional control with the use of one target limits the optimization process. With two targets, we have greater control over the film composition. This leads to higher hardness, lower stresses, and improved Young's modulus over films produced with a single CrAl target. Additionally, the morphologies are different (columnar with CrAl and dense with Cr and Al). To conclude, it seems more justified to work if possible with two independent targets.Regional Council of Burgund
