    Using Empirical Recurrence Rates Ratio For Time Series Data Similarity

    Several methods exist in classification literature to quantify the similarity between two time series data sets. Applications of these methods range from the traditional Euclidean type metric to the more advanced Dynamic Time Warping metric. Most of these adequately address structural similarity but fail in meeting goals outside it. For example, a tool that could be excellent to identify the seasonal similarity between two time series vectors might prove inadequate in the presence of outliers. In this paper, we have proposed a unifying measure for binary classification that performed well while embracing several aspects of dissimilarity. This statistic is gaining prominence in various fields, such as geology and finance, and is crucial in time series database formation and clustering studies

    Supporting High Quality Early Childhood Experiences for Children with and Without Disabilities and Their Families in Nevada

    It has become common for young children to be enrolled in some form early care or education programs before entering kindergarten (Whitebrook, McLean, & Austin, 2016). These experiences can encompass a range of programs and many families use multiple programs to meet their needs (U.S. Census Bureau, 2013). According to the U.S. Departments of Health and Human Services and Education (DHHS/DOE; 2014) early care and education includes programs that: provide early care and education to children birth through age five, where the majority of children in the program are typically developing. These include, but are not limited to, private or publicly funded center or family-based child care, home visiting, Early Head Start, Head Start, private preschool, and public school and community-based pre-kindergarten programs, including those in charter schools. (p.1) Quality early childhood programs help to promote children’s learning and development across all domains of development and prepare them for kindergarten. For children with disabilities, being meaningfully included in early care and education programs can support positive gains in development and learning. Furthermore, these early childhood programs have become vital for parents of young children to seek out employment, further education, and respite from the demands of parenting (Shonkoff & Phillips, 2000). However, families of young children with and without disabilities continue to struggle with access to affordable programs that meet the complex needs of families and support high quality and evidence-based early childhood education. As with the rest of the country, Nevada has been working to further the quantity and quality of early care and education experiences for its youngest residents and their families. However, as early childhood programs cross multiple sectors, departments, funding streams, and state and federal policies as well as challenges to serving children in urban, rural, and tribal areas of the state, moving ideas into action has been difficult

    The Traps Started During My Childhood : The Role of Substance Abuse in Women\u27s Responses to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)

    The gendered pathways perspective seeks to identify the biological, psychological, and social realities that lead to women’s law-breaking behavior. Prior research in this area demonstrates the link between women’s adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and involvement in the criminal justice system later in life. The current study fills an important gap in the literature by providing a phenomenological description of the impacts ACEs had upon 19 community supervised women’s lives. Their stories illuminate the need to consider multiple forms of ACEs, from physical and sexual abuse to the death of a loved one. Interviewees’ most prevalent response to ACEs was substance abuse. Three major themes related to their pathways to substance abuse emerged: coping/self-medication, escaping insecure households, and familial influences. Narratives were developed around each theme to provide an in-depth understanding of women’s ACEs and substance abuse. Theoretical and policy implications for women involved in the criminal justice system are discussed

    Phytoremediation of perchlorate by native and exotic riparian phreatophytes of the Las Vegas Wash, Nevada

    The potential to use native (Salix exigua) and exotic (Tamarix ramosissima) phreatophytes to remediate perchlorate from arid riparian environments was investigated by conducting a hydroponic greenhouse experiment. Salix exigua and Tamarix ramosissima exposed to ammonium perchlorate at concentrations of 10 mg L -1 and 100 mg L-1 removed 15 to 22% perchlorate mass from hydroponic solution, with 55 to 64% of removal being taken up into plant tissue. Total perchlorate taken up by plants or removed from solution was not significantly different between species on a mass or oven dry plant weight concentration basis. Significant differences in tissue specific uptake, however, were detected, with Salix exigua accumulating 78 to 87% of perchlorate in the leaf and Tamarix ramosissima exuding 84 to 87% of uptake onto leaf surfaces. Burning leaf tissue resulted in no detectable perchlorate in ash

    Trace element geochemistry of groundwater flow systems in southern Nevada and eastern California

    The Nevada Test Site (NTS) was used for underground nuclear tests before the 1960\u27s. Yucca Mountain in southern Nevada has been proposed as the site for the first high-level radioactive waste repository in the U.S. Because groundwater is a likely medium for transporting radio-nuclides to the accessible environment, determining the nature and path of groundwater movement through the aquifers at the NTS and Yucca Mountain is a critical task for assessing the risks and the future performance of the repository. In this study, systematic investigations of major ion and trace [mainly rare earth element (REE)] element geochemistry were conducted on different components of groundwater flow systems in southern Nevada, including groundwaters from representative springs and wells, aquifer rocks that comprise major aquifers, secondary minerals from fractures and veins in the aquifer rocks, and solutions from water/rock interactions. The geochemical data collected in this study help us characterize and compare major ion and REE signatures in different sample media, study changes in trace elements and REEs resulting from water/rock interactions, and develop a geochemical framework to trace groundwater from sources and predict groundwater flow paths and fluid mixing at the Nevada Test Site and the Yucca Mountain region of southern Nevada. The study also enhances our geologic and hydrologic understanding of trace element and REE geochemistry in the groundwater flow systems
