Rate-Distortion Analysis of Multiview Coding in a DIBR Framework
Depth image based rendering techniques for multiview applications have been
recently introduced for efficient view generation at arbitrary camera
positions. Encoding rate control has thus to consider both texture and depth
data. Due to different structures of depth and texture images and their
different roles on the rendered views, distributing the available bit budget
between them however requires a careful analysis. Information loss due to
texture coding affects the value of pixels in synthesized views while errors in
depth information lead to shift in objects or unexpected patterns at their
boundaries. In this paper, we address the problem of efficient bit allocation
between textures and depth data of multiview video sequences. We adopt a
rate-distortion framework based on a simplified model of depth and texture
images. Our model preserves the main features of depth and texture images.
Unlike most recent solutions, our method permits to avoid rendering at encoding
time for distortion estimation so that the encoding complexity is not
augmented. In addition to this, our model is independent of the underlying
inpainting method that is used at decoder. Experiments confirm our theoretical
results and the efficiency of our rate allocation strategy
Multilinear Wavelets: A Statistical Shape Space for Human Faces
We present a statistical model for D human faces in varying expression,
which decomposes the surface of the face using a wavelet transform, and learns
many localized, decorrelated multilinear models on the resulting coefficients.
Using this model we are able to reconstruct faces from noisy and occluded D
face scans, and facial motion sequences. Accurate reconstruction of face shape
is important for applications such as tele-presence and gaming. The localized
and multi-scale nature of our model allows for recovery of fine-scale detail
while retaining robustness to severe noise and occlusion, and is
computationally efficient and scalable. We validate these properties
experimentally on challenging data in the form of static scans and motion
sequences. We show that in comparison to a global multilinear model, our model
better preserves fine detail and is computationally faster, while in comparison
to a localized PCA model, our model better handles variation in expression, is

Self-Similar Anisotropic Texture Analysis: the Hyperbolic Wavelet Transform Contribution
Textures in images can often be well modeled using self-similar processes
while they may at the same time display anisotropy. The present contribution
thus aims at studying jointly selfsimilarity and anisotropy by focusing on a
specific classical class of Gaussian anisotropic selfsimilar processes. It will
first be shown that accurate joint estimates of the anisotropy and
selfsimilarity parameters are performed by replacing the standard 2D-discrete
wavelet transform by the hyperbolic wavelet transform, which permits the use of
different dilation factors along the horizontal and vertical axis. Defining
anisotropy requires a reference direction that needs not a priori match the
horizontal and vertical axes according to which the images are digitized, this
discrepancy defines a rotation angle. Second, we show that this rotation angle
can be jointly estimated. Third, a non parametric bootstrap based procedure is
described, that provides confidence interval in addition to the estimates
themselves and enables to construct an isotropy test procedure, that can be
applied to a single texture image. Fourth, the robustness and versatility of
the proposed analysis is illustrated by being applied to a large variety of
different isotropic and anisotropic self-similar fields. As an illustration, we
show that a true anisotropy built-in self-similarity can be disentangled from
an isotropic self-similarity to which an anisotropic trend has been
superimposed
Blind Curvelet based Denoising of Seismic Surveys in Coherent and Incoherent Noise Environments
The localized nature of curvelet functions, together with their frequency and
dip characteristics, makes the curvelet transform an excellent choice for
processing seismic data. In this work, a denoising method is proposed based on
a combination of the curvelet transform and a whitening filter along with
procedure for noise variance estimation. The whitening filter is added to get
the best performance of the curvelet transform under coherent and incoherent
correlated noise cases, and furthermore, it simplifies the noise estimation
method and makes it easy to use the standard threshold methodology without
digging into the curvelet domain. The proposed method is tested on
pseudo-synthetic data by adding noise to real noise-less data set of the
Netherlands offshore F3 block and on the field data set from east Texas, USA,
containing ground roll noise. Our experimental results show that the proposed
algorithm can achieve the best results under all types of noises (incoherent or
uncorrelated or random, and coherent noise)
