    Yesterday\u27s Tomorrows at the Dawn of ICIS: 30 Year Re-Visions from the 1st ICIS Doctoral Consortium

    ICIS 2009 marks the 30th anniversary of the 1st ICIS Doctoral Consortium held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. There were 19 student participants at that doctoral consortium, and 9 faculty – all full of anticipation, excitement, and some apprehension: where would the IS field lead them? Or where could they lead it? What did the future hold? What were the visions of the future for the IS field? This panel re-examines yesterday’s tomorrow’s and re-visions what they had seen 30 years ago to see what we can learn today for the next 30 years for the future of the IS field and IS research. This panel seeks to give a sense of history and of past visions, while devoting a large part of the panel time and discussion to generating insights for the future of the IS field. The panel is co-chaired by three of the student participants of the 1st ICIS 1980 Doctoral Consortium (Ariav, Dos Santos, and El Sawy). The two key panelists/speakers, Peter G.W. Keen and Michael Ginzberg were at the 1st ICIS as plenary speakers and doctoral consortium faculty

    The Effect of Perceived Service Quality, Perceived Sacrifice and Perceived Service Outcome on Online Customer Loyalty

    Customer loyalty is a key driver of financial performance in service organizations. We investigate whether or not online customer loyalty can be increased through enhancing the perceived service quality, reducing perceived sacrifice and improving the perceived service outcome in the online service context with the possible availability of live help service technology. We also investigate the moderating role of customer product knowledge on these relationships. The empirical results indicate that 1) online customer loyalty increases with higher perceived service quality, lower perceived sacrifice and better perceived service outcome, 2) perceived service quality positively influences perceived service outcome while perceived sacrifice negatively influences perceived service outcome, 3) customer product knowledge negatively moderates the relationship between perceived service quality and online customer loyalty such that greater product knowledge weakens that relationship, 4) customer product knowledge positively moderates the relationship between perceived sacrifice and online customer loyalty. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed

    Product Variety, Online Word of Mouth and Long Tail: An Empirical Study on the Internet Software Market

    This study examines the impact of both demand and supply side factors on long tail and superstar effects in the context of online software download. Our descriptive analysis suggests the coexistence of a steeper head and a longer but slimmer tail. Employing a novel empirical approach via the quantile regression model, we find a significant interaction effect between the demand-side factor (online user reviews) and the supply-side factor (product variety) on users’ software download. The influence of the two factors and their interplay on long tail and superstar effects vary significantly across different product popularity level. The results highlight the importance of incorporating both supply and demand factors in long tail research. The findings also offer an explanation for the mixed results reported in extant studies on the influence of online user reviews

    CITIZEN PARTICIPATION IN INCREASINGLY DIGITALIZED GOVERNMENTAL ENVIRONMENTS – A SYSTEMATIC LITERATURE REVIEW

    Citizen participation in increasingly digitalized governmental environments can introduce fruitful capabilities to encourage citizens to engage in municipal affairs and through this take actively part in fostering smart cities’ effectiveness. However, the practical exploitation of recent knowledge is still not sufficiently operationalized, whilst research in this field yields various approaches focusing on diverse emphases. Therefore, the necessity of systematically collecting and afterwards analysing the existing literature towards this topic is obvious. This paper depicts a proceeding to systematically review the available literature towards the relevant research units on citizen participation. Overall, 48 topic-based papers were identified out of leading journals and conference papers about information systems. The main findings of the relevant papers were assessed to a proposed analytical framework consisting of increasing participation stages and two distinct focus groups namely government and citizens. Accordingly, the covered recent focus areas of research are identified to reveal where state-of-the-art research falls short. Consequently, the imperative of emphasising investigation regarding concepts for ICT-enabled services focusing the empowerment of citizens arises as being our contribution for guiding future research, whilst governments can practically benefit from the composed framework by using it for classifying, planning and implementing proposed participation activities

    A “Look” into the IS Discipline through the Lens of MIS Quarterly: A Visual Examination of Scholar Characteristics

    Academic disciplines naturally form their own knowledge cultures. This research examines characteristics of knowledge creators by investigating a subset of information systems (IS) researchers, namely those who have published in one of the field’s premier journals – MIS Quarterly. Author characteristics (pedigree, gender, various location data, etc.) are examined and reported on. Additionally, with the aid of modern visualization tools such as Tableau and/or Microsoft Power BI, influential scholarly foci (knowledge centers) are analyzed. Findings suggest an increase of women, international scholars, and locations over time, are adding to the richness and diversity of the IS field. Furthermore, this research presents some discussion and presentation of the migratory pattern of IS researchers utilizing dynamic mapping visualizations

    Giving Users Control Over How Peers Handle Their Data: A Design Science Study

    In today’s interconnected world, Internet users are increasingly concerned about losing control over the data they share with peers, which indicates a need for higher levels of control and notification mechanisms. We address this need by building on design science methodology and developing a socio-technical artifact, i.e., a peer-privacy-friendly online messaging service. We draw on Malhotra et al.’s (2004) Internet Users’ Information Privacy Concerns framework and refine and evaluate our artifact via focus groups, interviews, and a survey among users of online messaging services. Our artifact provides senders with the ability to control how their personal information is processed by peers and allows receivers to be made aware of the sender’s privacy expectations. We contribute to the growing literature on peer privacy concerns by developing and evaluating design requirements, principles, and an instantiation that can mitigate peer privacy concerns that go beyond concerns about organizational data practices

    Team Collaboration in Virtual Worlds: Editorial to the Special Issue

    Virtual worlds are Internet-based three-dimensional (3D) computer-generated environments where users interact through “avatars” – a computer-generated representation of themselves that they control in terms of appearance and behavior. In recent years, virtual worlds have evolved into sophisticated social systems where millions of people regularly collaborate. For dispersed organizational teams, they represent a viable collaboration environment in which users can integrate different communication channels and manipulate digital artifacts that represent actual team deliverables. In this editorial to the Special Issue on Team Collaboration in Virtual Worlds, we discuss past research and highlight key findings with respect to five dimensions of collaborative work: technology, people, information, process, and leadership. We conclude with a discussion of the key research challenges that lie ahead to shape the research agenda for team collaboration in virtual worlds and metaverses

    Towards a Theory to Explain Prosocial Data Disclosure - An Explorative Investigation of the Antecedents of Infection Disclosure

    The voluntary infection disclosure in contact-tracing applications is a prominent context where individuals disclose their data for the benefit of others, thereby demonstrating a form of prosocial behavior. Defining such distinct types of data disclosures as prosocial data disclosures, we propose that the often-implicit assumption in privacy research that individuals consider benefits and costs solely from a “self-focused” perspective, should be reassessed to develop a new theory to explain prosocial data disclosures. To advance our understanding of the antecedents of prosocial data disclosure, our explorative research consists of a structured literature review and two qualitative surveys among 318 users of a European contact-tracing application. Our results indicate that the antecedents of prosocial data disclosures are generally evaluated from both a “self-focused” and an “other-focused” perspective. Within the specific context of infection disclosures, the main drivers are other-focused benefits while self-focused benefits have almost no relevance
