Probe of unparticles at the LHC in exclusive two lepton and two photon production via photon-photon fusion
The exclusive production pp->pXp is known to be one of the most clean
channels at the LHC. We investigate the potential of processes pp -> p l-l+ p
and pp-> p gamma gamma p to probe scalar and tensor unparticles by considering
three different forward detector acceptances; 0.0015<xi<0.15, 0.0015<xi<0.5 and
0.1<xi<0.5. We obtain 95% confidence level sensitivity limits on the unparticle
couplings for various integrated luminosities.Comment: 27 pages, 17 figure
Matrix product representation of gauge invariant states in a Z_2 lattice gauge theory
The Gauss law needs to be imposed on quantum states to guarantee gauge
invariance when one studies gauge theory in hamiltonian formalism. In this
work, we propose an efficient variational method based on the matrix product
ansatz for a Z_2 lattice gauge theory on a spatial ladder chain. Gauge
invariant low-lying states are identified by evaluating expectation values of
the Gauss law operator after numerical diagonalization of the gauge

Spectroscopy of 24Al and extraction of Gamow-Teller strengths with the 24Mg(3He,t) reaction at 420 MeV
The 24Mg(3He,t)24Al reaction has been studied at E(3He)=420 MeV. An energy
resolution of 35 keV was achieved. Gamow-Teller strengths to discrete levels in
24Al are extracted by using a recently developed empirical relationship for the
proportionality between Gamow-Teller strengths and differential cross sections
at zero momentum transfer. Except for small discrepancies for a few weak
excitations, good agreement with previous 24Mg(p,n) data and nuclear-structure
calculations using the USDA/B interactions in the sd shell-model space is
found. The excitation energy of several levels in 24Al of significance for
determination of the 23Mg(p,gamma)24Al thermonuclear reaction rate were
measured. Results are consistent with two of the three previous (3He,t)
measurements, performed at much lower beam energies. However, a new state at
Ex(24Al)=2.605(10) MeV was found and is the third state above the proton

A Solution to the Galactic Foreground Problem for LISA
Low frequency gravitational wave detectors, such as the Laser Interferometer
Space Antenna (LISA), will have to contend with large foregrounds produced by
millions of compact galactic binaries in our galaxy. While these galactic
signals are interesting in their own right, the unresolved component can
obscure other sources. The science yield for the LISA mission can be improved
if the brighter and more isolated foreground sources can be identified and
regressed from the data. Since the signals overlap with one another we are
faced with a ``cocktail party'' problem of picking out individual conversations
in a crowded room. Here we present and implement an end-to-end solution to the
galactic foreground problem that is able to resolve tens of thousands of
sources from across the LISA band. Our algorithm employs a variant of the
Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method, which we call the Blocked Annealed
Metropolis-Hastings (BAM) algorithm. Following a description of the algorithm
and its implementation, we give several examples ranging from searches for a
single source to searches for hundreds of overlapping sources. Our examples
include data sets from the first round of Mock LISA Data Challenges.Comment: 19 pages, 27 figure
2D-Drop model applied to the calculation of step formation energies on a (111) substrate
A model is presented for obtaining the step formation energy for metallic
islands on (111) surfaces from Monte Carlo simulations. This model is applied
to homo (Cu/Cu(111), Ag/Ag(111)) and heteroepitaxy (Ag/Pt(111)) systems. The
embedded atom method is used to represent the interaction between the particles
of the system, but any other type of potential could be used as well. The
formulation can also be employed to consider the case of other single crystal
surfaces, since the higher barriers for atom motion on other surfaces are not a
