15 GHz quadrature voltage controlled oscillator in 130 nm CMOS technology
This paper reports a 15 GHz quadrature voltage controlled oscillator (QVCO) designed in a 130 nm CMOS technology. The phase noise performance of the QVCO and of a phase locked loop (PLL) where the QVCO was inserted were compared with the literature and with telecom standards and commercial products for broadcast satellite applications
The Debrisoft ® monofilament debridement pad for use in acute or chronic wounds: A NICE medical technology guidance
As part of its Medical Technology Evaluation Programme, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) invited a manufacturer to provide clinical and economic evidence for the evaluation of the Debrisoft ® monofilament debridement pad for use in acute or chronic wounds. The University of Birmingham and Brunel University, acting as a consortium, was commissioned to act as an External Assessment Centre (EAC) for NICE, independently appraising the submission. This article is an overview of the original evidence submitted, the EAC’s findings and the final NICE guidance issued. The sponsor submitted a simple cost analysis to estimate the costs of using Debrisoft® to debride wounds compared with saline and gauze, hydrogel and larvae. Separate analyses were conducted for applications in home and applications in a clinic setting. The analysis took an UK National Health Service (NHS) perspective. It incorporated the costs of the technologies and supplementary technologies (such as dressings) and the costs of their application by a district nurse. The sponsor concluded that Debrisoft® was cost saving relative to the comparators. The EAC made amendments to the sponsor analysis to correct for errors and to reflect alternative assumptions. Debrisoft® remained cost saving in most analyses and savings ranged from £77 to £222 per patient compared with hydrogel, from £97 to £347 compared with saline and gauze, and from £180 to £484 compared with larvae depending on the assumptions included in the analysis and whether debridement took place in a home or clinic setting. All analyses were severely limited by the available data on effectiveness, in particular a lack of comparative studies and that the effectiveness data for the comparators came from studies reporting different clinical endpoints compared with Debrisoft®. The Medical Technologies Advisory Committee made a positive recommendation for adoption of Debrisoft® and this has been published as a NICE medical technology guidance (MTG17).The Birmingham and Brunel Consortium is funded by NICE to act as an External Assessment Centre for the Medical Technologies Evaluation Programme
A flexible sensor technology for the distributed measurement of interaction pressure
We present a sensor technology for the measure of the physical human-robot interaction pressure developed in the last years at Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna. The system is composed of flexible matrices of opto-electronic sensors covered by a soft silicone cover. This sensory system is completely modular and scalable, allowing one to cover areas of any sizes and shapes, and to measure different pressure ranges. In this work we present the main application areas for this technology. A first generation of the system was used to monitor human-robot interaction in upper- (NEUROExos; Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna) and lower-limb (LOPES; University of Twente) exoskeletons for rehabilitation. A second generation, with increased resolution and wireless connection, was used to develop a pressure-sensitive foot insole and an improved human-robot interaction measurement systems. The experimental characterization of the latter system along with its validation on three healthy subjects is presented here for the first time. A perspective on future uses and development of the technology is finally drafted

Demonstration experiments for solid state physics using a table top mechanical Stirling refrigerator
Liquid free cryogenic devices are acquiring importance in basic science and
engineering. But they can also lead to improvements in teaching low temperature
an solid state physics to graduate students and specialists. Most of the
devices are relatively expensive, but small sized equipment is slowly becoming
available. Here, we have designed several simple experiments which can be
performed using a small Stirling refrigerator. We discuss the measurement of
the critical current and temperature of a bulk YBa2Cu3O(7-d) (YBCO) sample, the
observation of the levitation of a magnet over a YBCO disk when cooled below
the critical temperature and the observation of a phase transition using ac
calorimetry. The equipment can be easily handled by students, and also used to
teach the principles of liquid free cooling
Promising Beginning? Evaluating Museum Mobile Phone Apps
Since 2009 museums have started introducing mobile apps in their range of interpretative media and visitor services.
As mobile technology continues to develop and permeate all aspects of our life, and the capabilities of smart phones
increase while they become more accessible and popular, new possibilities arise for cultural institutions to exploit these
tools for communicating in new ways and promoting their exhibitions and programmes. The use of mobile apps opens
up new channels of communication between the cultural institution and the user, which extent to his or her personal
space and go beyond the boundaries of the museum’s walls. The paper presents a survey carried out of mobile apps
designed by art or cultural historical museums and analyses the wider issues which are raised by the findings. It
discusses, among others, the kind of use these apps were designed to fulfil (e.g. the majority are guided tours to the
permanent collections or to temporary exhibitions), the layering of content,and the type of user interaction and
involvement they support
