    Conceptual design of an XML FACT repository for dispersed XML document warehouses and XML marts

    Since the introduction of eXtensible Markup Language (XML), XML repositories have gained a foothold in many global (and government) organizations, where, e-Commerce and e-business models have maturated in handling daily transactional data among heterogeneous information systems in multi-data formats. Due to this, the amount of data available for enterprise decision-making process is increasing exponentially and are being stored and/or communicated in XML. This presents an interesting challenge to investigate models, frameworks and techniques for organizing and analyzing such voluminous, yet distributed XML documents for business intelligence in the form of XML warehouse repositories and XML marts. In this paper, we address such an issue, where we propose a view-driven approach for modelling and designing of a Global XML FACT (GxFACT) repository under the MDA initiatives. Here we propose the GxFACT using logically grouped, geographically dispersed, XML document warehouses and Document Marts in a global enterprise setting. To deal with organizations? evolving decision-making needs, we also provide three design strategies for building and managing of such GxFACT in the context of modelling of further hierarchical dimensions and/or global document warehouses

    An Ontology Based Approach To The Integration Of Heterogeneous Information Systems Supporting Integrated Provincial Administration In Khon Kaen, Thailand

    Information systems are a necessity to the administration of organizations. In a recent reform to the Thai administration, the governor of each province is entrusted with the full responsibility for the strategic planning and execution of the Integrated Provincial Administration (IPA). This presents a big challenge and many difficult problems for a potentially fast growing, both economically and demographically, province, such as Khon Kaen. To provide the administrator of the province with reliable and up to date information, the Provincial Operation Centre (POC) has been set up and assigned the task of collecting all required information from disparate information systems, many of which are legacy systems. This information lacks interoperability and integration of data due to many different structures and semantic heterogeneity encountered in many information systems. This research is a part of a collaborative data sources community development project. It attempts to aid high-level decision makers by using ontology to resolve heterogeneities among many disparate data sources. After relevant data sources are identified, they are analysed to reveal important and corresponding concepts, attributes and relations. They are then used in the creation of ontologies to resolve schematic and semantic conflicts in the data sources. The integration of many heterogeneous information systems will provide a unified view of information facilitating the provincial administrator in his decision making

    The provision of education and training for healthcare professionals through the medium of the internet

    This paper describes a new initiative to provide Internet based courses to student and professional occupational therapists in four centres in the UK, Belgium the Netherlands and Sweden. The basis of this collaborative Occupational Therapy Internet School (OTIS) is the concept of the “Virtual College”. This comprises the design and implementation of a sophisticated Internet-based system through which courses can be managed, prepared and delivered online in an effective fashion, and where students can communicate both with the staff and their peers. The aim is to support and facilitate the whole range of educational activities within a remote electronic environment. A major feature of the course organisation is the adoption of a problem-based approach in which students will collaborate internationally to propose effective intervention in given case study scenarios. The paper outlines the rationale for OTIS, the content and structure of the courseware, the technical specification of the system and evaluation criteria. In addition to the more conventional web-based learning facilities generally offered, a number of agent-based approaches are being adopted to assist in the management of the course by ensuring the proper delivery of course materials and to assist the functioning of project groups. </p

    A Review of integrity constraint maintenance and view updating techniques

    Two interrelated problems may arise when updating a database. On one hand, when an update is applied to the database, integrity constraints may become violated. In such case, the integrity constraint maintenance approach tries to obtain additional updates to keep integrity constraints satisfied. On the other hand, when updates of derived or view facts are requested, a view updating mechanism must be applied to translate the update request into correct updates of the underlying base facts. This survey reviews the research performed on integrity constraint maintenance and view updating. It is proposed a general framework to classify and to compare methods that tackle integrity constraint maintenance and/or view updating. Then, we analyze some of these methods in more detail to identify their actual contribution and the main limitations they may present.Postprint (published version

    Schema Management for Data Integration: A Short Survey

    Schema management is a basic problem in many database application domains such as data integration systems. Users need to access and manipulate data from several databases. In this context, in order to integrate data from distributed heterogeneous database sources, data integration systems demand the resolution of several issues that arise in managing schemas. In this paper, we present a brief survey of the problem of schema matching which is used for solving problems of schema integration processing. Moreover, we propose a technique for integrating and querying distributed heterogeneous XML schemas.

    Information Exchange Decision Support (IEDS) Framework

    Information Exchange (IE) is an important area of research in Information Systems (IS), there is a lack of a framework that guides the design of an IE systems to support IE among multiple stakeholders with the purpose of improving the decision-making. To address this literature gap, this paper utilizes the Theory of Information Exchange (ToIE) as a kernel theory to develop an Information Exchange Decision Support (IEDS) framework. The framework depicts how to design an IE platform for multiple stakeholders to improve their decision quality. The qualitative evaluation shows that the IEDS framework is useful for identifying stakeholders, specifying information to be exchanged, and maintaining motivation factors necessary for IE. The IEDS framework offers prescriptive knowledge for building an effective IE in a multiple stakeholder environment and it can be applied in different business domains and provide guidance to the designers and developers of IE platforms
