    Mobile Arts for Peace: Small Grants Evaluation Report

    The Mobile Arts for Peace (MAP) project is an international study that seeks to provide a comparative approach to peace-building utilising interdisciplinary arts-based practices, working with communities in Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan, Nepal and Rwanda (see figure 1.1). This research was commissioned by the project lead organisation, the University of Lincoln, and has been delivered by the University of Northampton’s Institute for Social Innovation and Impact (see Appendix A for research biographies). This report focuses on the Small Grants awarded across the four countries, and acts as a follow-up to the Phase One Report that was produced in the winter of 2021. The delivery of the Small Grants projects has taken place over the last 12 months across the above four countries, and this report seeks to demonstrate, through a narrative case-study approach, how the Small Grants work delivered has promoted arts-based peacebuilding and supported community cohesion. The research reported in this document took place between February and October 2022 and focused on the below research aim and four key research questions. Aim: To evaluate the efficacy of the MAP Small Grants projects and understand their impact in communities. Specifically: 1. What outputs were delivered through the Small Grants projects? 2. What outcomes for beneficiaries/stakeholders were delivered through the Small Grants projects? 3. What impacts delivered for communities and societies across the four countries were delivered through the Small Grants projects? The report is structured as follows: first, the methodological approach undertaken in the evaluation will be presented; second, the case-studies across the four countries will be presented and discussed, utilising data gathered by the in-country research teams and the arts-based outputs produced; third, the findings will be summarised, with specific recommendations also made for the implications related to the MAP Large Grant evaluation projects and the recently awarded MAP Medium Grant projects.     Consent and the Construction of the Volunteer: Institutional Settings of Experimental Research on Human Beings in Britain during the Cold War

    This study challenges the primacy of consent in the history of human experimentation and argues that privileging the cultural frameworks adds nuance to our understanding of the construction of the volunteer in the period 1945 to 1970. Historians and bio-ethicists have argued that medical ethics codes have marked out the parameters of using people as subjects in medical scientific research and that the consent of the subjects was fundamental to their status as volunteers. However, the temporality of the creation of medical ethics codes means that they need to be understood within their historical context. That medical ethics codes arose from a specific historical context rather than a concerted and conscious determination to safeguard the well-being of subjects needs to be acknowledged. The British context of human experimentation is under-researched and there has been even less focus on the cultural frameworks within which experiments took place. This study demonstrates, through a close analysis of the Medical Research Council's Common Cold Research Unit (CCRU) and the government's military research facility, the Chemical Defence Experimental Establishment, Porton Down (Porton), that the `volunteer' in human experiments was a subjective entity whose identity was specific to the institution which recruited and made use of the subject. By examining representations of volunteers in the British press, the rhetoric of the government's collectivist agenda becomes evident and this fed into the institutional construction of the volunteer at the CCRU. In contrast, discussions between Porton scientists, staff members, and government officials demonstrate that the use of military personnel in secret chemical warfare experiments was far more complex. Conflicting interests of the military, the government and the scientific imperative affected how the military volunteer was perceived

    There is a growing concern in this country that the middle class is disappearing and not in the way one would hope. Instead of families moving into a higher socio-economic class and being able to provide richer life experiences for themselves and their children, vast numbers are shifting to a lower socio-economic status level. The gap between the affluent and those barely eking out an existence is increasing at an alarming rate. This trend will directly affect who can successfully attend college and who will be available and capable to perform the blue-collar jobs that are vital to the continuation of our economy. Many of these jobs are becoming increasingly complex and sophisticated. While they may not require a college degree, they do require additional post-secondary training and expertise. Longer reaching concerns are that a dwindling middle class equates to a smaller tax base and contributes to a larger segment of the population that needs financial assistance. The productive management of money is part of a concept known as financial literacy. People that have money take this knowledge for granted. Somewhere along the line, whether it was at home, in school, or from personal experiences, successful people learned the value of earning money and using it thoughtfully and intentionally in order to achieve a future goal. No one disputes the fact that personal choices and discretion are parts of the picture. Imagine, however, that the environment in which you grew up did not contain earning possibilities. Perhaps you had to work without pay caring for your siblings, leaving no time to go out and earn your own money. Maybe your family was in the situation where everything that each family member earned was required to try to make ends meet. The result can be a feeling of ignorance and powerlessness around financial literacy and a lack of understanding the difference it could make in your life. This dissertation examines these issues. As a Scholarly Personal Narrative, it will also relate the story of my own journey of acquiring financial literacy and how that knowledge has affected my life. It concludes with a proposal that I created for teaching the concepts of financial literacy to underserved members of our society living at the lower socio-economic level. This education is important because understanding financial literacy can build self-confidence, empowerment, and purpose. This knowledge can also set an example that parents can pass on to their children and future generations. I believe this is one possible route toward breaking the cycle of poverty

The first theme investigates the historic and ongoing systemic barriers women of color face. The second theme reveals the erasure and exploitation of women of color, highlighting the testimonies and experiences of real women of color in STEM. The third theme explores possible solutions to increase the accessibility and inclusivity of STEM.     Breast mass segmentation from mammograms with deep transfer learning

    Abstract. Mammography is an x-ray imaging method used in breast cancer screening, which is a time consuming process. Many different computer assisted diagnosis have been created to hasten the image analysis. Deep learning is the use of multilayered neural networks for solving different tasks. Deep learning methods are becoming more advanced and popular for segmenting images. One deep transfer learning method is to use these neural networks with pretrained weights, which typically improves the neural networks performance. In this thesis deep transfer learning was used to segment cancerous masses from mammography images. The convolutional neural networks used were pretrained and fine-tuned, and they had an an encoder-decoder architecture. The ResNet22 encoder was pretrained with mammography images, while the ResNet34 encoder was pretrained with various color images. These encoders were paired with either a U-Net or a Feature Pyramid Network decoder. Additionally, U-Net model with random initialization was also tested. The five different models were trained and tested on the Oulu Dataset of Screening Mammography (9204 images) and on the Portuguese INbreast dataset (410 images) with two different loss functions, binary cross-entropy loss with soft Jaccard loss and a loss function based on focal Tversky index. The best models were trained on the Oulu Dataset of Screening Mammography with the focal Tversky loss. The best segmentation result achieved was a Dice similarity coefficient of 0.816 on correctly segmented masses and a classification accuracy of 88.7% on the INbreast dataset. On the Oulu Dataset of Screening Mammography, the best results were a Dice score of 0.763 and a classification accuracy of 83.3%. The results between the pretrained models were similar, and the pretrained models had better results than the non-pretrained models. In conclusion, deep transfer learning is very suitable for mammography mass segmentation and the choice of loss function had a large impact on the results.Rinnan massojen segmentointi mammografiakuvista syvä- ja siirto-oppimista hyödyntäen. Tiivistelmä. Mammografia on röntgenkuvantamismenetelmä, jota käytetään rintäsyövän seulontaan. Mammografiakuvien seulonta on aikaa vievää ja niiden analysoimisen avuksi on kehitelty useita tietokoneavusteisia ratkaisuja. Syväoppimisella tarkoitetaan monikerroksisten neuroverkkojen käyttöä eri tehtävien ratkaisemiseen. Syväoppimismenetelmät ovat ajan myötä kehittyneet ja tulleet suosituiksi kuvien segmentoimiseen. Yksi tapa yhdistää syvä- ja siirtooppimista on hyödyntää neuroverkkoja esiopetettujen painojen kanssa, mikä auttaa parantamaan neuroverkkojen suorituskykyä. Tässä diplomityössä tutkittiin syvä- ja siirto-oppimisen käyttöä syöpäisten massojen segmentoimiseen mammografiakuvista. Käytetyt konvoluutioneuroverkot olivat esikoulutettuja ja hienosäädettyjä. Lisäksi niillä oli enkooderi-dekooderi arkkitehtuuri. ResNet22 enkooderi oli esikoulutettu mammografia kuvilla, kun taas ResNet34 enkooderi oli esikoulutettu monenlaisilla värikuvilla. Näihin enkoodereihin yhdistettiin joko U-Net:n tai piirrepyramidiverkon dekooderi. Lisäksi käytettiin U-Net mallia ilman esikoulutusta. Nämä viisi erilaista mallia koulutettiin ja testattiin sekä Oulun Mammografiaseulonta Datasetillä (9204 kuvaa) että portugalilaisella INbreast datasetillä (410 kuvaa) käyttäen kahta eri tavoitefunktiota, jotka olivat binääriristientropia yhdistettynä pehmeällä Jaccard-indeksillä ja fokaaliin Tversky indeksiin perustuva tavoitefunktiolla. Parhaat mallit olivat koulutettu Oulun datasetillä fokaalilla Tversky tavoitefunktiolla. Parhaat tulokset olivat 0,816 Dice kerroin oikeissa positiivisissa segmentaatioissa ja 88,7 % luokittelutarkkuus INbreast datasetissä. Esikoulutetut mallit antoivat parempia tuloksia kuin mallit joita ei esikoulutettu. Oulun datasetillä parhaat tulokset olivat 0,763:n Dice kerroin ja 83,3 % luokittelutarkkuus.     Embodying entrepreneurship: everyday practices, processes and routines in a technology incubator

    The growing interest in the processes and practices of entrepreneurship has been dominated by a consideration of temporality. Through a thirty-six-month ethnography of a technology incubator, this thesis contributes to extant understanding by exploring the effect of space. The first paper explores how class structures from the surrounding city have appropriated entrepreneurship within the incubator. The second paper adopts a more explicitly spatial analysis to reveal how the use of space influences a common understanding of entrepreneurship. The final paper looks more closely at the entrepreneurs within the incubator and how they use visual symbols to develop their identity. Taken together, the three papers reject the notion of entrepreneurship as a primarily economic endeavour as articulated through commonly understood language and propose entrepreneuring as an enigmatic attractor that is accessed through the ambiguity of the non-verbal to develop the ‘new’. The thesis therefore contributes to the understanding of entrepreneurship and proposes a distinct role for the non-verbal in that understanding

    Reawakening Sport and Community Engagament in a previous Olympic Host City: Capitalising on the Athens 2004 Olympic Volunteer Legacy 17 Years on

    This project aimed to revise understanding of the current experiences of civil and volunteer sector stakeholders. It employed a qualitative, mixed-method, research design comprising strategically targeted semi-structured interviews and surveys with 19 civil society professionals and Athens 2004 volunteer programme administrators and participants. Findings reveal that the Athens 2004 Olympic Games was aided by existing sector expertise and resources, eventually encouraged further third sector development in the country, and inspired individuals to continue wider volunteer-related work. Additionally, while broader social, political, economic factors and a lack of post-Games strategy hindered sector development, new collaborative opportunities were also created. Ultimately, these findings provide a critical appraisal and guidelines for enhancing future Olympic volunteer legacies in host cities

    The developing maternal-infant relationship: a qualitative longitudinal study

    Aim The study aimed to explore maternal perceptions and the use of knowledge relating to their infant’s mental health over time using qualitative longitudinal research. Background There has been a growing interest in infant mental health over recent years. Much of this interest is directed through the lens of infant determinism, through knowledge regarding neurological development resulting in biological determinism. Research and policy in this field are directed toward individual parenting behaviours, usually focused on the mother. Despite this, there is little attention given to maternal perspectives of infant mental health, indicating that a more innovative approach to methodology is required. Methods This study took a qualitative longitudinal approach, and interviews were undertaken with seven mothers from the third trimester of pregnancy and then throughout the first year of the infant’s life. Interviews were conducted at 34 weeks of pregnancy, and then when the infant was 6 and 12 weeks, 6, 9, and 12 months, alongside the collection of researcher field notes—a total of 41 interviews. Data were analysed by creating case profiles, memos, and summaries, and then cross-comparison of the emerging narratives. A psycho-socially informed approach was taken to the analysis of data. Findings Three interrelated themes emerged from the data: evolving maternal identity, growing a person, and creating a safe space. The theme of evolving maternal identity dominated the other themes of growing a person and creating a safe space in a way that met perceived socio-cultural requirements for mothering and childcare practices. Participants’ personal stories give voice to their perceptions of the developing maternal-infant relationship in the context of their socio-cultural setting, relationships with others, and experiences over time. Conclusions This study adds new knowledge by giving mothers a voice to express how the maternal-infant relationship develops over time. The findings demonstrate how the developing maternal-infant relationship grows in response to their mutual needs as the mother works to create and sustain identities for herself and the infant that will fit within their socio-cultural context and individual situations. Additionally, the findings illustrate the importance of temporal considerations, social networks, and intergenerational relationships to this evolving process. Recommendations for practice, policy, and education are made that reflect the unique relationship between mother and infant and the need to conceptualise this using an ecological approach
