    FOREIGN BODY ORBIT

    Get PDF
The aim of this case presentation was to present the troubles and significance of a proper diagnosis of a foreign body which was retained in the orbit. A 13 years old boy, had a wound on the infraorbital margin caused by a metal foreign body, which stayed in close to the orbit. X-ray and echographic examinations of the orbit were not conclusive regarding the question whether thisforeign body was situated within or outside the eyeball. Only CT imaging showed location of the foreign body. Foreign body was extracted by the same healed wound site.

Pricing behaviour under competition in the UK electricity supply industry

    Get PDF
This paper investigates the evolution of electricity prices for domestic customers in the UK following the introduction of competition. The empirical analysis is based on a panel data set containing detailed information about electricity supply prices over the period 1999 to 2006. The analysis aims to test theoretical hypotheses about the nature of consumers’ switching and search costs. The econometric analysis of persistence and price dispersion provides only limited support for the view that the market is becoming more competitive and also indicates that there remain significant potential benefits to consumers from searching alternative suppliers

Design of the Intravenous Magnesium Efficacy in Acute Stroke (IMAGES) trial

    Get PDF
The Intravenous Magnesium Efficacy in Acute Stroke (IMAGES) trial is a multicentre, randomised, placebo-controlled trial of magnesium sulphate (MgSO4) funded by the UK Medical Research Council. When complete, it will be the largest single neuroprotective study undertaken to date. Conscious patients presenting within 12 h of acute stroke with limb weakness are eligible. The primary outcome measure is combined death and disability as measured using the Barthel Index at 90-day follow up. By randomizing 2700 patients, the study will have 84% power to detect a 5.5% absolute reduction in the primary end-point. By April 2000, 86 centres were participating, with representation in Canada, USA, Europe, South America, Singapore and Australia. So far, 1206 patients have been randomised, of whom 37% were treated within 6 h. Overall 3-month mortality was 20% and the primary outcome event rate was 43%. The study is ongoing and centres worldwide are encouraged to participate

Risks of user-development application in small business

    Get PDF
This paper discusses the risks of developing computerised business applications by end-users particularly in the small business environment. As today’s end-users are becoming more and more sophisticated, coupled with the proliferation of Information Technology (IT) that has brought the computerisation of business activities within reach of many small firms, understanding the benefits and risks of user-developed applications would contribute towards the small firm’s effectiveness in IT adoption. This is particularly relevant in today’s managing business where businesses, including the small firms, in a volatile environment will have to compete not only locally but also globally, and IT is seen to be an enabler that can help small firms to increase their competitiveness. Relevant literature on the benefits and risks of user-developed applications were sought and summarised in this paper. Findings were also based on a case study investigation of small firms with no formal IT function where observations were made on the end-user developers who were given the responsibility to develop the firm’s computerised applications. Whilst the benefits have been enormously highlighted and at times overshadowed the risks, due attention is given to examining the risks so as to provide a more balanced report and a precautionary measure for end-user developers. Risks were categorised according to organisational and individual risks following the application development stages of planning, analysis, design and implementation
