    Programatisme diartikan sebagai aliran atau faham yang berkembangsebagai kekuatan baru akibat dari sikap para komposer, seperti : Ludwigvon Beethoven (1770-1827) dan Franz Peter Schubert (1797-1828), yangmencipta musik program pada awal era Romantik abad ke-19. Sikapeksploratif Richard Wagner (1813-1883), Giussepe Verdi (1813-1901),maupun Franz Liszt (1811-1886), yang memberikan makna baru padakomposisi seakan mengoreksi dan bahkan menentang keterbatasan aliranmusik “absolut†yang tetap menekankan pada penggunaan bentuk-bentukmusik sebagai platform komposisi.
