Towards collaborative applications using web services
Web services are becoming popular as a system integration solution for distributed applications.
They allow for publishing, finding and binding of distributed software components over a Wide Area Network like the Internet and are platform and operating system independent.
In a traditional scenario, ontologies are defined and published by a consortium or enterprise group for each application discourse. These specifications can later be implemented by many web service providers.Eje: Procesamiento distribuido y paraleloRed de Universidades con Carreras en Informática (RedUNCI
Edge-as-a-Service: Towards Distributed Cloud Architectures
We present an Edge-as-a-Service (EaaS) platform for realising distributed
cloud architectures and integrating the edge of the network in the computing
ecosystem. The EaaS platform is underpinned by (i) a lightweight discovery
protocol that identifies edge nodes and make them publicly accessible in a
computing environment, and (ii) a scalable resource provisioning mechanism for
offloading workloads from the cloud on to the edge for servicing multiple user
requests. We validate the feasibility of EaaS on an online game use-case to
highlight the improvement in the QoS of the application hosted on our
cloud-edge platform. On this platform we demonstrate (i) low overheads of less
than 6%, (ii) reduced data traffic to the cloud by up to 95% and (iii)
minimised application latency between 40%-60%.Comment: 10 pages; presented at the EdgeComp Symposium 2017; will appear in

Building a Truly Distributed Constraint Solver with JADE
Real life problems such as scheduling meeting between people at different
locations can be modelled as distributed Constraint Satisfaction Problems
(CSPs). Suitable and satisfactory solutions can then be found using constraint
satisfaction algorithms which can be exhaustive (backtracking) or otherwise
(local search). However, most research in this area tested their algorithms by
simulation on a single PC with a single program entry point. The main
contribution of our work is the design and implementation of a truly
distributed constraint solver based on a local search algorithm using Java
Agent DEvelopment framework (JADE) to enable communication between agents on
different machines. Particularly, we discuss design and implementation issues
related to truly distributed constraint solver which might not be critical when
simulated on a single machine. Evaluation results indicate that our truly
distributed constraint solver works well within the observed limitations when
tested with various distributed CSPs. Our application can also incorporate any
constraint solving algorithm with little modifications.Comment: 7 page
MOSDEN: A Scalable Mobile Collaborative Platform for Opportunistic Sensing Applications
Mobile smartphones along with embedded sensors have become an efficient
enabler for various mobile applications including opportunistic sensing. The
hi-tech advances in smartphones are opening up a world of possibilities. This
paper proposes a mobile collaborative platform called MOSDEN that enables and
supports opportunistic sensing at run time. MOSDEN captures and shares sensor
data across multiple apps, smartphones and users. MOSDEN supports the emerging
trend of separating sensors from application-specific processing, storing and
sharing. MOSDEN promotes reuse and re-purposing of sensor data hence reducing
the efforts in developing novel opportunistic sensing applications. MOSDEN has
been implemented on Android-based smartphones and tablets. Experimental
evaluations validate the scalability and energy efficiency of MOSDEN and its
suitability towards real world applications. The results of evaluation and
lessons learned are presented and discussed in this paper.Comment: Accepted to be published in Transactions on Collaborative Computing,
