Quand l'anti-racisme devient malheureux : professionnalisme protecteur, pratiques affectives racialisées et angles morts temporels

Abstract

Comment l’anti-racisme peut-il se réduire à un performatif malheureux qui ne parvient pas – ou laborieusement – à créer les conditions de son succès, et qui est vulnérable aux tentatives de sabotage et de délégitimation ? Comment, en tant que personnes racialisées, pourrions-nous lutter contre le racisme alors même que la racialisation façonne nos grilles sensorielles et nos capacités d’action ? En d’autres termes, pour paraphraser la théoricienne Sara Ahmed, comment lutter contre le racisme sans être diminué-es par les effets de la race ? C’est à ces questions que je tente de répondre dans cette thèse, à travers une ethnographie militante patchwork, où j’adopte une perspective phénoménologique critique qui place la focale sur l’expérience de lutter contre le racisme et sur les pratiques de représentation qui sont performées par des militant-es anti-racistes au Québec. À travers trois cadres théoriques différents, et complémentaires, – une approche communicationnelle et critique du professionnalisme et de la débattabilité du racisme (article 1), une approche critique des affects (article 2) et une approche critique de la temporalité (article 3) – j’étudie comment des militant-es (y compris l’autrice) font sens, négocient et parfois entrent en conflit dans leurs pratiques de représentation de l’anti-racisme. L’anti-racisme que j’étudie dans cette thèse revendique une compréhension systémique et structurelle tout en performant un répertoire d’action institutionnalisé, à travers le rôle de porte-parole, d’une part, et l’initiative d’une consultation, d’autre part. Mes résultats m’amènent au constat que les « malheurs » de cet anti-racisme sont aussi tributaires d’un investissement excessif dans des pratiques affectives qui diminuent l’être-dans-le-monde des personnes racialisées. Je conclus en plaidant en faveur d’un anti-racisme qui multiplie les moments d’insubordination affective et qui mobilise les affects comme des pratiques de libération.How can anti-racism be reduced to an unhappy performative that fails—or struggles—to create the conditions for its success, and that is vulnerable to attempts at sabotage and delegitimisation? How, as racialised people, can we fight racism when racialisation shapes our sensory frameworks and our capacities for action? In other words, to paraphrase theorist Sara Ahmed, how can we engage in a struggle against racism without being diminished by the effects of race? These are the questions I attempt to answer in this thesis, through a patchwork militant ethnography, in which I adopt a critical phenomenological perspective that focuses on the experience of fighting racism and on the practices of representation performed by anti-racist activists in the Province of Quebec. I study how activists (including the author) make sense of, negotiate and sometimes are in conflict with each other about their practices of representing anti-racism, through three different and complementary theoretical frameworks—a communicational and critical approach to professionalism and to the debatability of racism (article 1), a critical approach to affect (article 2) and a critical approach to temporality (article 3). The anti-racism I study in this thesis calls for a systemic and structural understanding of racism while performing an institutionalised repertoire of action, through the role of spokesperson, on the one hand, and the initiative of an independent consultation, on the other. My findings lead me to conclude that the ‘unhappiness’ of this anti-racism is also due to an excessive investment in affective practices that diminish the being-in-the-world of racialised people. I conclude by arguing in favour of an anti-racism that multiplies moments of affective insubordination and mobilises affects as practices of liberation
