Oriente en transición: viajeros modernistas en la China de principios del siglo xx

Abstract

Through a reading of the travel chronicles of the Latin American modernists Enrique Gómez Carrillo (1905) and Arturo Ambrogi (1915), this article analyzes the representations of China in the early twentieth century. Unlike previous studies, which have focused on how these authors reproduced or interpreted Orientalist discourse, this analysis examines the traces of the historical context of the Asian nation. By analyzing their itineraries and observations on Chinese culture, it argues that these chronicles articulate an ambivalent gaze: although they reproduce exoticizing elements, they also reveal a growing concern with China’s social and political transformations during the late Qing dynasty and the early Republic. Therefore, these texts suggest an early formation of a Latin American imagination that articulated debates on modernity and colonialism across both regions.A partir de la lectura de las crónicas de viaje de los modernistas latinoamericanos, Enrique Gómez Carrillo (1905) y Arturo Ambrogi (1915), este artículo analiza las representaciones de China a comienzos del siglo xx. A diferencia de los estudios previos, centrados en cómo los autores reprodujeron o interpretaron el discurso orientalista, este análisis se enfoca en las huellas del contexto histórico del país asiático. Mediante el examen de los itinerarios y sus observaciones sobre la cultura china, se sostiene que estas crónicas expresan una mirada ambivalente: si bien reproducen rasgos exotizantes, también revelan una preocupación por las transformaciones sociales y políticas a finales de la dinastía Qing y comienzos de la República de 1912. Así, los textos permiten vislumbrar la configuración temprana de un imaginario latinoamericano que articulaba debates sobre modernidad y colonialismo en ambas regiones
