'Not at all': emphatic negative adverbs in Classical Greek*

Abstract

International audienceThis study explores emphatic negative adverbs in Classical Greek, focusing on expressions like not at all and their linguistic characteristics. The research identifies a number of phrases, analyzing their frequency, syntactic behavior, and relation to negation: some of them are widely used (οὐδαμῶς, οὐδέν, or τὸ παράπαν preceded or followed by negation), other are rather frequent (παντάπασιν or ἀρχήν), whilst others are rare or even limited to a couple of attestations (πάμπαν, τὸ πᾶν, ἄντικρυς, πώμαλα, παντελῶς and ἀτεχνῶς). The most frequent phrases also show signs of a greater fixity.Resumen: Este trabajo estudia los adverbios de negación enfáticos en griego clásico con el foco puesto en expresiones como en absoluto y sus características lingüísticas.
