Fim de linha ou marco zero? Anton Webern aos olhos de Theodor Adorno e da Escola de Darmstadt

Abstract

The relationship between Theodor Adorno and the serial music of the early 1950s was notoriously conflictive, leading some to believe that the philosopher was unable to develop an immanent reflection on the post-war avant-garde. In this article, we present a more complex picture of the relationship between Adorno and the composers of the Darmstadt School. We argue that both agree on the need to take twelve-tone composition as a reference, although they come to this conclusion from different perspectives. We also try to show that the divergent interpretations of Webern's work developed by the philosopher and the serialists are in fact structurally similar. Finally, we discuss the way in which Adorno revised his interpretation of Webern's work in the light of serialism and, at the same time, used it in his immanent critique of serialism.A relação entre Theodor Adorno e a música serial do início dos anos 1950 foi notoriamente conflituosa, levando alguns a acreditar que o filósofo não se mostrou capaz de desenvolver uma reflexão imanente a respeito da vanguarda do pós-Guerra. No presente artigo, apresentamos um retrato mais complexo da relação entre Adorno e os compositores da Escola de Darmstadt. Argumentamos que ambos estão de acordo quanto à necessidade de tomar o dodecafonismo como referência, ainda que cheguem a esta conclusão por perspectivas diferentes. Procuramos mostrar também que as interpretações divergentes da obra de Webern elaboradas pelo filósofo e pelos serialistas são na realidade estruturalmente semelhantes. Por fim, discutimos a maneira como Adorno revisou sua interpretação da obra weberniana à luz do serialismo e, ao mesmo tempo, se valeu dela em sua crítica imanente do serialismo
