A inserção de sírios e libaneses em atividades rurais no Espírito Santo no início do século XX

Abstract

Syrian and Lebanese immigration to Brazil was characterised by its urban nature, as was the case for those who settled in Espírito Santo. However, some of these migrants acquired rural property and worked in agriculture. The aim of this article is to analyse the involvement of Syrians and Lebanese in rural activities in the south of Espírito Santo. We used the methodological approach of oral history, through which we interviewed five descendants of these immigrants who settled in Espírito Santo. Cadastral and statistical surveys were also used. Historical sources included the 1920 List of Owners of Rural Establishments in the State of Espírito Santo and three post-mortem inventories. It is clear that while some Syrians and Lebanese invested part of the capital earned from trading in the acquisition of large properties, others devoted themselves exclusively to farming.A imigração síria e libanesa para o Brasil destacou-se por seu caráter urbano, o que também se aplica aos que se assentaram no Espírito Santo. No entanto, alguns desses sujeitos migrantes adquiriram propriedades rurais e se dedicaram à agricultura. O objetivo deste artigo é analisar a inserção dos sírios e libaneses em atividades rurais no sul capixaba.  Utilizou-se a abordagem metodológica da História Oral, por meio da qual foram entrevistados cinco descendentes desses imigrantes fixados em terras sul espírito-santenses. Além disso, fez-se uso de levantamentos cartoriais e estatísticos. Como fontes históricas, recorreu-se à Relação dos Proprietários dos Estabelecimentos Rurais do Estado do Espírito Santo, de 1920, além de três inventários post mortem. O que se verificou é que, enquanto alguns sírios e libaneses investiram parte do capital amealhado com o comércio na aquisição de latifúndios, outros dedicaram-se exclusivamente à atividade agrícola
