Introduction: Religion and Controversies in Schools

Abstract

Religiöse Kontroversen sind ein konstitutives Merkmal einer superdiversen schulischen Lebenswelt in liberalen Demokratien. Sie artikulieren sich nicht nur in Debatten über geopolitische oder wissenschaftliche Fragen, sondern treten ebenso in alltäglichen schulischen Konflikten zu religiösen Symbolen, Gebet oder Sexualerziehung auf. Schule wird damit konfrontiert, zwischen dem Spannungsverhältnis weltanschaulicher Neutralität, religiöser Bedürfnisse und liberal-demokratischer Werte zu vermitteln. Das Themenheft untersucht, wie solche Kontroversen in Bildungszusammenhängen verstanden und bearbeitet werden (können), indem es theoretische Reflexion, empirische Einsichten und didaktische Perspektiven zusammenführt. Ziel ist es, interdisziplinäre Perspektiven auf religionsbezogene Kontroversen zu bündeln und zu systematisieren sowie sie in ein internationales Forschungsfeld zu integrieren.Religious controversies are a constitutive feature of super-diverse school contexts in liberal democracies. They emerge not only in debates on geopolitical or scientific issues, but also in everyday school practices such as the use of religious symbols, prayer, or sex education, and thus confront schools with the task of mediating between ideological neutrality, religious needs and commitment to liberal-democratic values.This special issue explores how such controversies can be understood and addressed in educational contexts by bringing together theoretical reflection, empirical insight, and didactical perspectives. The aim is to consolidate and systematise the aforementioned interdisciplinary perspectives on religion-related controversies and to integrate them into an international field of research
