Hellenizm na wschód od Eufratu

Abstract

Hellenism, as understood by the ancients, was a set of cultural characteristics that set the Greeks apart from others. In the Hellenistic period, it was fundamentally defined by a commonality of language, worship of the gods, lifestyle and sport, and with the latter the related spread of gymnasia. Beyond the Euphrates, there is little trace of Greek settlement; acculturation into Greek culture of the settlers' children was not served by a tenuous network of gymnasia. The cities of the Hellenistic East were oriental in character and their polity was generally shaped according to oligarchic Macedonian models. The Seleukid rulers were eager to endow Greek temples, but rarely participated in Greek agonies. The Arsakids shunned – probably deliberately - both activities. The weakness of Hellenism beyond the Euphrates is also evidenced by the low involvement of subjects of both dynasties in Greek sports. The promotion of Greek culture beyond the Euphrates, already weak in the Seleukid era, came to an end under the Arsakids, and Hellenism quickly lost its vitality.Hellenizm, w rozumieniu starożytnych, był zespołem cech kulturowych odróżniających Greków od innych. W epoce hellenistycznej wyznaczały go w zasadniczym stopniu wspólnota języka, kultu bogów, stylu życia i sport oraz powiązane z tym ostatnim upowszechnienie gimnazjonów. Za Eufratem ślady osadnictwa greckiego są niewielkie, akulturacji w kulturze greckiej dzieci osadników nie służyła wątła sieć gimnazjonów. Miasta hellenistycznego Wschodu miały charakter orientalny, a ich ustrój kształtowano na ogół według oligarchicznych wzorców macedońskich. Władcy seleukidzcy chętnie obdarowywali greckie świątynie, ale z rzadka uczestniczyli w greckich agonach. Arsakidzi stronili – zapewne celowo – od obu tych aktywności. O słabości hellenizmu za Eufratem świadczy też małe zaangażowanie poddanych obu dynastii w sport grecki. Promocja kultury greckiej za Eufratem, słaba już w epoce selukidzkiej, w czasach arskidzkich dobiegła końca, a hellenizm szybko utracił żywotność
