Abstract

The article explores how we can define the concept of mental health in today's society, considering the vast array of cultural contexts that exist. Globally, the World Health Organization and the Global Mental Health movement have proposed different ways to approach and understand people's mental health. This paper aims to highlight and make visible cultural differences in the perception and treatment of psychological suffering. It also addresses the influence of stigma and the lack of access to culturally adapted services to better understand what mental health is. The need for a transcultural approach that balances biomedical aspects with sociocultural factors is emphasized, promoting inclusive and culturally sensitive practices. Mental health should be understood within its social context, avoiding reductionism and encouraging the integration of traditional and scientific knowledge for more equitable and effective care.El artículo explora cómo podemos definir el concepto de salud mental en la sociedad actual, teniendo en cuenta la infinidad de contextos culturales que existen hoy día. A nivel mundial, la Organización Mundial de la Salud y el movimiento de Salud Mental Global han planteado diferentes maneras de enfocar y comprender la salud mental de las personas. El artículo busca resaltar y visibilizar las diferencias culturales en la percepción y tratamiento del sufrimiento psíquico. También aborda la influencia del estigma y la falta de acceso a servicios adaptados culturalmente para poder comprender mejor qué es la salud mental. Se enfatiza la necesidad de un enfoque transcultural que equilibre lo biomédico con factores socioculturales, promoviendo prácticas inclusivas y culturalmente sensibles. La salud mental debe ser englobada dentro de su contexto social, evitando reduccionismos y favoreciendo una integración de conocimientos tradicionales y científicos para un cuidado más equitativo y eficaz
