What is the nature of the cartesian morality?

Abstract

In this article, we aim to establish a connection between certain aspects of Descartes’s ethics — particularly the concept of virtue — and the Petrine tradition, that is, the moral and religious precepts prescribed by the Apostle Simon Peter. To this end, we undertake a comparative study between Descartes’s letter to Elisabeth dated August 4, 1645, and the first chapter of the Second Epistle of Saint Peter. We argue for the hypothesisthat a direct comparison between the two texts allows us to identify, in both Descartes and Peter, theoretical and conceptual elements of a similar nature concerning the nature of a virtuous life, since both associated virtuewith knowledge, constancy, and self-mastery. In defending this hypothesis, we align ourselves with the interpretive approach proposed by Jean Laporte (2000), one of Descartes’s canonical commentators, who envisioned the possibility of reconciling Cartesian morality with Christianity.
