A causalidade do Bem no Símile do Sol da República de Platão

Abstract

The paper points out an issue in the history of interpretation of the Simile of Sun in Plato's Republic. The issue rests on the meaning attributed by the scholars to the terms “eînai” and “ousía” in the passage Rep. 509b. Far from being a narrow problem of translation, the point is vital, because it determines the extent of the causality which platonic Socrates attributes to the Idea of Good with respect to the other Ideas. The paper presents the main exegetic positions on that subject assumed in the scholarship in XX and XXI centuries. Afterward, it makes a criticism to some of the main solutions presented by the scholars, showing which position is compatible with Plato's text.O artigo identifica um problema na história da interpretação do símile do Sol da República de Platão, no que tange aos sentidos que, na passagem Rep. 509b, foram atribuídos pelos estudiosos aos termos “eînai” e “ousía”. Mais que um mero problema de tradução, a questão é crucial, porque determina o próprio alcance da causalidade que o personagem Sócrates atribui à Ideia de Bem em relação às outras Ideias. O artigo apresenta as principais posições exegéticas acerca da matéria assumidas pelos especialistas dos séculos XX e XXI. Em seguida, faz a crítica a algumas das principais soluções do problema, demonstrando qual posição se encontra compatível com o texto de Platão
