El juramento recíproco entre Enrique II de Navarra y las «Cortes de Navarra» (Ultrapuertos): el nacimiento de una asamblea representativa

Abstract

We present the transcription and study of the reciprocal oath taken between the nascent Cortes held in “Ultrapuertos”, a northern territory of medieval Navarre, and its king, Henry II of Albret. Among other aspects, it is worth highlighting the presence of the expression “Cortes” of Navarre in the main sections of the oath, as a discursive element of a fictitious representation of the kingdom of Navarre as a whole. It is also important to add the novel character of the conformation of this representative assembly, with respect to the Cortes of medieval Navarre as a whole, adapted to the social reality of the small Navarrese merindad of “Ultrapuertos”, better known from the mid-16th century onwards by the name of Lower Navarre.Presentamos la transcripción y estudio del juramento recíproco realizado entre las nacientes Cortes celebradas en Ultrapuertos, territorio septentrional de la Navarra medieval, y su rey, Enrique II de Albret. Entre otros aspectos, cabe destacar la presencia de la expresión “Cortes de Navarra” en apartados principales del juramento, como elemento discursivo de una representatividad, ficticia, del conjunto del reino de Navarra. También resulta importante añadir el carácter novedoso de la conformación de esta asamblea representativa, respecto a las Cortes del conjunto de la Navarra medieval, adaptada a la realidad social de la pequeña merindad navarra de Ultrapuertos, más conocida a partir de mediados del siglo XVI por la denominación de Baja Navarra
