Solving Applied Problems Between Algebra and Arithmetic. The Two Works of ̔Izz al-Dīn al-Zanjānī,al-Qusṭās and al- ̔Umda, as a Case Study

Abstract

يهدف هذا البحث إلى دراسة طرائق ح ّل المسائل التطبيقية في كتب الحساب والجبر ضمن التقليد الرياضي العربي، من خلال تحليل مقاربة الزنجاني في كتابيه العمدة (الحسابي) والقُسطاس (الجبري). ويركز البحث على المقارنة بين العملين للكشف عن أوجه التكامل والاختلاف في معالجة المسائل التطبيقية، مع تت ّبع المصادر التي استلهم منها الزنجاني حلولَه، مما يُبرز موقعه ضمن تط ّور علمي الحساب والجبر في التقليد الرياضي العربيThis study aims to examine the methods of solving applied problems in arith-metic and algebraic texts within the Arabic mathematical tradition, through an analysis of al-Zanjānī’s approach in his two works: ̔Umdat al-Ḥussāb (Arithmetic) and Qusṭās al-Mu ̔ādala fī ̔Ilm al-Jabr wa al-Muqābala (Algebra). The research focuses on comparing the two works to uncover the points of convergence and divergence in their treatment of applied problems, while also tracing the sources from which al-Zanjānī drew inspiration. This highlights his position within the development of arithmetic and algebra in the Ara-bic mathematical tradition
