Nizhyn as an outpost of the Lithuanian-Polish state on borders with Muscovy

Abstract

Метою статті є визначення ролі та місця Ніжина в ХІV – на початку ХVІІ ст., доведення його належності до литовсько-польської держави в цей період. Методологічну основу дослідження становлять історико-генетичний та історико-порівняльний методи, а також загальнонаукові методи аналізу та синтезу. Наукова новизна: уперше здійснено детальний аналіз широкого комплексу джерел про Ніжин у визначений період. Вивчено шлях становлення міста. Проведено вивчення й співставлення картографічних матеріалів ХVІІ ст. Зроблено висновок, що Ніжин у ХІV – на початку ХVІІ ст. був порубіжним форпостом литовсько-польської держави в межах Київського воєводства, який час від часу зазнавав нападів і спустошення з боку московитів. Остаточному формуванню Ніжина як міста сприяло укладення Деулінської угоди в 1618 р. та пересування кордону між Річчю Посполитою та Московією далеко на північ і схід. Великий внесок у розвиток Ніжина зробило українське козацтво.The purpose of the publication is to determine the role and place of Nizhyn in the 14th – the early 17th c., to prove its belonging to the Lithuanian-Polish state during this period. The methodological basis of the study is historical-genetic and historical-comparative methods, as well as general scientific methods of analysis and synthesis. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that for the first time a detailed analysis of a wide range of sources about Nizhyn in a certain period has been carried out. The path of the cityʼs formation has been studied. Cartographic materials of the 17th c. have been studied and compared. It is concluded that Nizhyn in the 14th – the early 17th c. was a border outpost of the Lithuanian-Polish state within the Kyiv voivodeship, which from time to time was subjected to attacks and devastation by Muscovites. The final formation of Nizhyn as a city was facilitated by the conclusion of the Deulinsky agreement in 1618 and the movement of the border between the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Muscovy far to the north and east.
