The dangers and successes of Milei - lessons from Argentina

Abstract

The aim of the presentation is to summarise Milei's political work since he took office in december 2023 by clarifying parts of his theoretical positions and ideological framework and explaining his links to the ‘New Right’. The social and economic consequences of his presidency are then presented. Finally, 3 lessons are drawn as to what we can take away from Milei's presidency. Argentinian President Javier Milei describes himself as a supporter of ‘liberalismo libertario’ and pursues a radical liberal economic policy that is supported by the use of presidential emergency laws (DNUs). The DNUs have already been used under previous presidents to strengthen their position of power and push through their political programme. His reform agenda includes deregulation and privatisation. These measures led to a devastating economic crisis in 2024. However, the first signs of improvement emerged at the end of 2024. Argentine society is highly polarised and Milei's policies have led to massive protests. After all, there are three lessons for Europe and Germany to be learnt from Argentina: Argentina was once a country. Germany should take it as a warning that a rich country is not rich by nature. One positive aspect of Milei's agenda is the reduction in bureaucracy. It is not only annoying and paralysing, it also makes us less free. But Milei also serves as an example of the danger of centralising power. In order to protect freedom and democratic values, we should rather focus on decentralisation and more grassroots democratic decision-making
