ENTRE OS CONFLITOS E A COOPERAÇÃO: : As Migrações Bárbaras E Sua Interação Com O Império Romano No Século IV E.C.

Abstract

In this paper, we aim to define and discuss the barbarian migrations, specifically of the Goths, in the 4th century of the Common Era, reaching the event that culminated in the settlement of these peoples in Roman territory, under Theodosius I (347 – 395), as foederati, and how the development of this relationship culminated in conflicts and cooperation between the barbarians and the Romans. For our analysis, we will use passages from the work Getica, written by the historian of Gothic origin Jordanes, who lived in the 6th century C.E. This work tells the history and deeds of the Goths, emphasizing the complexity of the Roman-barbarian relationship. We aim to show how the barbarian migrations were not the reason for a Roman collapse, but rather an element that transformed the concepts of identity and borders in the studies of Late Antiquity.Neste trabalho temos como objetivo definir e discutir as migrações bárbaras, especificamente dos godos, no século IV da Era Comum, chegando ao evento que culminou o assentamento desses povos no território romano, sob Teodósio I (347 – 395), na condição de foederati, e como o desenvolvimento dessa relação culminou em ora em conflitos, e ora em cooperação entre os bárbaros e os romanos. Para nossa análise, utilizaremos passagens da obra Getica, escrita pelo historiador de origem gótica Jordanes, que viveu no século VI E.C. Esta obra conta sobre a história e os feitos dos godos, dando ênfase na complexidade do relacionamento romano-bárbaro. Visamos mostrar com as migrações bárbaras não foram a razão de um colapso romano, mas sim um elemento que transformou as concepções de identidade e fronteiras nos estudos da Antiguidade Tardia
