What Work, What Struggles? Living Labour and Labour Geography

Abstract

Die Labour Geography fokussiert auf die Handlungsmacht (»Agency«) von Arbeiter*innen, vernachlässigt aber eine theoretische Auseinandersetzung mit dem Begriff der Arbeit selbst, der erst die Grundlage dieser Agency bildet. Mit Rekurs auf Marx’ allgemeinen Arbeitsbegriff unternehmen wir daher unter anderem den Versuch, den Arbeits- und Reproduktionsbegriff für die Labour Geography zu (re-)konzeptualisieren. Dies geschieht unter Zuhilfenahme eines transversalen Verständnisses von Arbeit und Reproduktion jenseits funktionalistischer Engführungen sowie durch das Verständnis von (Lohn-)Arbeit als einer auf gesellschaftlichen und sozialen Sinn orientierten Tätigkeit ermächtigender Raumproduktion.Labour geography focuses on the agency of workers, but neglects a theoretical examination of the concept of work itself, which forms the basis of this agency. Referring to Marx’s concept of work, we attempt to (re)conceptualizes the concepts of work and social reproduction for Labour Geography. This is done with the help of a transversal understanding of work and reproduction beyond functionalist narrow-mindedness, as well as through the understanding of (wage) labour as an activity oriented towards social meaning and empowering space production
