Researching and Organising Global Value Chains: The Next Node Approach

Abstract

Eine der größten Herausforderungen für Gewerkschaften ist, Arbeiter*innen in sich stetig wandelnden globalen Wertschöpfungsketten zu vernetzen und zu organisieren. In diesem Beitrag stelle ich den Next-Node-Ansatz als methodisches Tool vor, um systematisch (1) Wertschöpfungsketten mit Arbeiter*innen gemeinsam zu erforschen und um, darauf aufbauend, (2) Vernetzungs- und Organisationspotenziale von und mit Arbeiter*innen zusammen entlang der Ketten ausloten zu können. Ein partizipatives Forschungsprojekt mit Bekleidungsarbeiter*innen in Kambodscha dokumentiert die Herausforderungen, aber auch Potenziale des Ansatzes, der auch in jeder anderen Wertschöpfungskette Anwendung finden kann.One of the biggest challenges for trade unions in the 21st century is to connect and organise labour in constantly changing global value chains. In this paper, I introduce the next-node approach as a methodological tool to systematically (1) explore value chains together with workers, and based on that (2) identify networking and organisational potentials with and among workers along the chains. A participatory research project with garment workers in Cambodia documents the challenges as well as the potentials of this approach. It can be applied not only in the garment industry but in any other value chain
