Neoexpresionism and post-punk in the requiem for Ian Curtis. Comparison of the mise en scène used by filmmakers Michael Winterbottom and Anton Corbijn for Joy Division’s Atmosphere

Abstract

La bandabritánicaJoy Division fue el máximo exponente del estilo conocido como post-punk. La oscuridad de su sonido, el pesimismo de sus letras y una puesta en escena heredera del Expresionismo alemán contribuyeron a aumentar su aura de grupo maldito. La prematura muerte en 1980 de su líder Ian Curtis, con tan solo 23 años, no hizo más que acrecentar la leyenda.Uno de los responsables de afianzar la estética de la banda fue el fotógrafo neerlandés Anton Corbijn. Trasuna exitosa carrera como director de videoclips, s u debut en la gran pantalla se produciría en 2007 con el estreno de la aclamada películaControl, basada en la vida de Ian Curtis. Este terreno ya había sido explorado previamente por el director inglés Michael Winterbottom en su film 24 Hour Party People(2002). En el presente estudio, compararemos por un lado el acercamiento al mismo tema por parte de dos directores muy diferentes, y por otro trataremos de demostrar el legado expresionista en la estética del post-punk y, más concretamente, en el trabajo de CorbijnThe British band Joy Division was the greatest exponent of the style known as post-punk. Their dark sound, the pessimism of their lyrics and a mise en scène inherited from German Expressionism contributed to increase their aura of a damned music band.
