Are stories the chicken or the egg?

Abstract

Abstract: This Commentary integrates lessons from the Mirror System Hypothesis of the origin of language and Ferretti’s emphasis on the centrality of narrative as both precursor and expression of language. It qualifies the notion that “stories came first” by showing that stories expressible in pre-language pantomime are very much simpler than narratives of the scope we can share in modern languages. We thus insist on the term “protonarrative” and explore how the path from pantomime via protolanguages to modern languages formed an expanding spiral with the path from protonarratives to the richness of narratives as we know them today. Additionally, pre-language pantomime served for social coordination and simple forms of teaching. In short, protonarrative was one of the precursors of modern languages but a crucial one, while present-day narratives provide powerful expressions of the capabilities of modern human languages.Keywords: Evolution of Language; Mirror System Hypothesis; Narrative; Pantomime; Protolanguage Le storie sono l’uovo o la gallina?Riassunto: Questo commento integra gli insegnamenti dell’Ipotesi del Sistema Specchio sull’origine del linguaggio con l’enfasi posta da Ferretti sulla centralità della narrazione quale precursore ed espressione del linguaggio. Si accredita l’idea secondo cui “le storie sono venute prima” mostrando che le storie che si possono esprimere mediante una pantomima pre-linguistica sono molto più semplici delle narrazioni che possiamo condividere nelle lingue moderne. Insisteremo quindi sull’uso del termine “protonarrazione” ed esploreremo come il percorso che va dalla pantomima alle lingue moderne, passando per protolinguaggi, si sia mosso come una spirale in espansione, parallela al cammino che va dalle protonarrazioni alla ricchezza narrativa che conosciamo oggi. Inoltre, la pantomima pre-linguistica serviva per la coordinazione sociale e per forme semplici di insegnamento.
