Economizing DJing: Comparing the professional model and economic challenges of professional and amateur DJs

Abstract

The thesis addresses the issue of the economization of DJing in the context of the music industry and focuses on the differences between professional and amateur DJs in terms of income models, investment behaviour and career strategies. The thesis uses a qualitative research approach, with semi-structured interviews as the main method of data collection. The data material is analysed using thematic analysis, which allows for a systematic exploration of meaning units in relation to the research questions. Thematic analysis of the interviews reveals major differences in income strategies, the degree of income diversification, access to investment in technical equipment, the economization of producing their own music, and the impact of collaborations with performers on DJs' visibility and financial stability. The paper also reflects on the broader transformations of DJing in the digital era, particularly the impact of streaming platforms, social networks and DJ collaborations with artists and brands.Diplomová práce se věnuje problematice ekonomizace DJingu v kontextu hudebního průmyslu a zaměřuje se na rozdíly mezi profesionálními a amatérskými DJi z hlediska příjmových modelů, investičního chování a kariérních strategií. Práce využívá kvalitativní výzkumný přístup, přičemž hlavní metodou sběru dat jsou polostrukturované rozhovory. Datový materiál je analyzován pomocí tematické analýzy, která umožňuje systematické zkoumání významových jednotek ve vztahu k výzkumným otázkám. Tematická analýza rozhovorů odhaluje hlavní rozdíly v příjmových strategiích, míře diverzifikace příjmů, v přístupu k investicím do technického vybavení, v ekonomizaci produkce vlastní hudby a v dopadu spoluprací s interprety na viditelnost a finanční stabilitu DJů. Práce také reflektuje širší proměny DJingu v digitální éře, zejména vliv streamovacích platforem, sociálních sítí a spoluprací DJů s umělci a značkami
