Psycholinguistic Phenomena in the Use of Fillers when Speaking among Indonesian Learners of English

Abstract

The findings of this study revealed that participants used more fillers in speaking as transaction. The study further found that students produced more unlexicalized fillers, particularly the filler 'ee', in their speech. Moreover, the use of fillers was triggered by several factors, including infrequent words, inadequate preparation of time, mental reasons, nervousness, and divided attention. It was further discovered that students had two perceptions regarding the use of fillers, namely negative and positive perceptions, with a dominant tendency towards the negative perception of fillers in speaking
