Inclusivity is essential for young adults to feel accepted, develop their identity, and experience a sense of belonging. This thesis explores how LGBTQ+ Young Adult literature can be used in the English subject to promote inclusivity. It focuses on three novels: Loveless by Alice Oseman, Felix Ever After by Kacen Callender, and The Black Flamingo by Dean Atta – all of which explore multiple LGBTQ+ themes. The study investigates how the protagonists challenge normative conceptions of gender and sexuality, aiming to encourage a more nuanced thinking among students and teachers in the EFL classroom.
The research includes a discourse analysis of the three novels and a thematic content analysis of LK20. Excerpts from both the novels and the curriculum are examined through the lens of queer theory to highlight their relevance to the curriculum and to demonstrate how they can be used to foster inclusivity in the classroom
