Adaptación Bioclimática y Sostenibilidad de la Arquitectura Vernácula en Rumicruz, Chimborazo: Un Estudio de Caso Múltiple

Abstract

Introduction. Introduction: Vernacular architecture uses local knowledge and materials to adapt to the Andean climate and culture, but migration and modernization threaten its value and social cohesion. Preserving it is key to sustainability and community memory. Objective. Therefore, this research aims to: Analyze the formal, functional, constructive, and bioclimatic characteristics, the context and state of conservation of six vernacular houses in the community of Rumicruz, with the purpose of contributing to the rescue, valuation, and preservation of its traditional architecture. Methodology. Qualitative and descriptive research of six vernacular houses in Rumicruz, Chimborazo, combining field work and documentary review. With ethnographic method, it analyzes formal, functional, and bioclimatic aspects through visits and empirical and theoretical data. It includes dwellings and inhabitants, whose knowledge is key to value traditional architecture as a heritage and sustainable model. Results. In Rumicruz, at more than 3200 meters above sea level, six old vernacular dwellings, mostly abandoned, are in a small area for security and access to local materials. They have compact volumes, adobe, and mud walls, sloping thatched roofs and few openings to conserve heat, with orientations that protect from the wind and take advantage of the sun. Internally, multifunctional spaces reflect traditional lifestyles. Their passive bioclimatic design optimizes thermal comfort, supported by wooden structures and local materials, although recent changes have affected their original efficiency and functionality. Conclusion. The vernacular architecture of Rumicruz is an efficient bioclimatic adaptation with local techniques that surpass modern constructions, but modernization and migration threaten its conservation. La arquitectura vernácula usa saberes y materiales locales para adaptarse al clima y cultura andina, pero la migración y modernización amenazan su valor y cohesión social. Preservarla es clave para la sostenibilidad y memoria comunitaria. Objetivo. Por lo tanto, esta investigación tiene como objetivo: Analizar las características formales, funcionales, constructivas, bioclimáticas, el contexto y estado de conservación de seis viviendas vernáculas de la comunidad de Rumicruz, con el propósito de contribuir al rescate, valoración y preservación de su arquitectura tradicional. Metodología. Investigación cualitativa y descriptiva de seis viviendas vernáculas en Rumicruz, Chimborazo, que combina trabajo de campo y revisión documental. Con método etnográfico, analiza aspectos formales, funcionales y bioclimáticos mediante visitas y datos empíricos y teóricos. Incluye viviendas y habitantes, cuyo saber es clave para valorar la arquitectura tradicional como patrimonio y modelo sostenible. Resultados. En Rumicruz, a más de 3200 msnm, seis viviendas vernáculas antiguas, mayormente abandonadas, se ubican en un área pequeña por seguridad y acceso a materiales locales. Presentan volúmenes compactos, muros de tapial y adobe, cubiertas inclinadas de paja y pocas aberturas para conservar calor, con orientaciones que protegen del viento y aprovechan el sol. Internamente, espacios multifuncionales reflejan estilos de vida tradicionales. Su diseño bioclimático pasivo optimiza el confort térmico, apoyado en estructuras de madera y materiales locales, aunque recientes cambios han afectado su eficiencia y funcionalidad original. Conclusión. La arquitectura vernácula de Rumicruz es una adaptación bioclimática eficiente con técnicas locales que superan construcciones modernas, pero la modernización y migración amenazan su conservación. Revalorizarla con políticas y capacitación integrando saberes tradicionales fortalecerá identidad y resiliencia comunitaria. Área de estudio general: Arquitectura.
