The Effectiveness of task-based video assisted discussion platform (Flip) on secondary school students' English speaking anxiety and self-regulation skills for learning of the lesson

Abstract

Bu araştırmanın amacı, görev-tabanlı video destekli tartışma ortamının (Flip) ortaokul öğrencilerinin İngilizce konuşma kaygıları ve derse yönelik öz-düzenleme becerileri üzerindeki etkisini incelemektir. Araştırmada karma araştırma desenlerinden biri olan açıklayıcı sıralı desen kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın nicel boyutunda ön-test son-test kontrol gruplu yarı deneysel desen kullanılmış, nitel boyutu ise durum çalışması şeklinde yürütülmüştür. Çalışma, 2023-2024 akademik yılı bahar döneminde Batı Karadeniz'de bir ortaokulda yedinci sınıfa devam eden 54 ortaokul öğrencisiyle (38 kız, 18 erkek) gönüllülük esası gözetilerek yürütülmüştür. Araştırmada bir deney (n=25) ve bir kontrol grubu (n=29) olmak üzere toplam iki grup rastgele belirlenmiştir. Deney grubunda yer alan öğrencilerin İngilizce dersinde belirli görevler doğrultusunda kendi videolarını tasarlayıp paylaştığı ve birbirlerine geribildirim verdiği bir öğrenme ortamı olarak Flip uygulaması kullanılmıştır. Kontrol grubunda ise herhangi müdahalede bulunulmamıştır. Araştırmanın uygulama aşaması sekiz hafta sürmüştür. Nicel boyutta Veri toplama aracı olarak "İngilizce Konuşma Kaygısı Ölçeği", "Güdülenme ve Öğrenme Stratejileri Ölçeği (GÖSÖ)" nitel boyutta ise "Yarı Yapılandırılmış Görüşme Formu" kullanılmıştır. Deneysel çalışma sonucunda elde edilen nicel veriler SPSS 27.0 paket programı ile analiz edilmiş, görüşme formu aracılığıyla elde edilen nitel veriler ise içerik analizi ve betimsel analiz kullanılarak çözümlenmiştir. Araştırmanın sonuçları doğrultusunda Flip uygulamasının kullanıldığı deney grubundaki öğrencilerin İngilizce konuşma kaygı düzeyleri kontrol grubuna göre anlamlı düzeyde azalmıştır. Öte yandan, İngilizce dersine yönelik öz-düzenleme becerisi değişkeni açısından ön-test puanları kontrol edildiğinde değer, kaygı, meta bilişsel stratejiler, bilişsel stratejiler, kaynak yönetimi ve öğrenme stratejileri alt boyutlarında deney grubu lehine anlamlı farklılıklar tespit edilmiştir. Yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmelerden elde edilen veriler doğrultusunda deney grubunda uygulanan görev-tabanlı video destekli tartışma ortamına yönelik öğrencilerin ağırlıklı olarak olumlu görüşlere sahip olduğu görülmüştür. Araştırmanın bulgularından hareketle video tabanlı uygulamalar değerlendirilerek bu uygulamaların eğitim alanındaki kullanımına yönelik önerilerde bulunulmuştur.The aim of this research is to examine the effect of task-based video-supported discussion platform (Flip) on secondary school students' English speaking anxiety and self-regulation skills for the course. An explanatory sequential design, one of the mixed research designs, was used in the research. The quantitative aspect of the research was conducted as a quasi-experimental design with pre-test post-test control group and the qualitative aspect was conducted as a case study. The study was conducted with 54 seventh-grade secondary school students studying in a secondary school in the Western Black Sea Region in the 2023-2024 academic year, on voluntary basis. Two groups have been determined randomly as an experimental and a control group. Volunteer principle was taken into account. In the experimental group, lessons were conducted using the Flip application as a learning environment where students designed and shared their own videos in line with certain tasks and gave feedback to each other. No experimental application or intervention was made to control group. The implementation period of the research lasted eight weeks. For quantitative aspect, "English Speaking Anxiety Scale", "Motivational Strategies for Learning Scale (MSLQ)" and for qualitative aspect "Semi-Structured Interview Form" were used as data collection tools in the research. SPSS 27.0 packet program was used to analyze the quantitative data obtained during the experimental process, and the qualitative data obtained from the interview form was analyzed using content analysis and descriptive analysis. In line with the results of the study, it was revealed that the speaking anxiety of students who were applied Flip application decreased at a significant level. On the other hand, when pre-test results in relation with self-regulation were checked significant variation on behalf of the experiment group was found. In accordance with the data obtained through semi-structured interview, it was determined that the majority of students had positive opinions about Flip. Based on the findings of the research, video-based applications were mentioned and suggestions were made for their use in the field of education
